Polecats at Nationals on Sunday.

Polecats opened the scoring after a defensive mix-up left Lee alone in the box and his low shot found the net. This spurred a lethargic Rebels team into action and a number of good opportunities were squandered by the forwards.

The equaliser came finally from a defensive clearance, which was flicked on by Kirk Edmunds and crossed first time where Donny Moniz deflected the ball into the Polecats goal. Rebels continued to pressure the Polecats defence, which was unable to stop Moniz beating four defenders before slipping the ball past Davie Kerr for the winning goal.

Moniz had a chance to complete his hat-trick when Rebels were awarded a penalty but his shot went wide.

Chameleons and leaders Wasps battled to a scoreless draw in a top of the table clash. The match was fought in the middle of the park as neither side was able to create good scoring chances. Wasps considered themselves fortunate to escape with a draw against a strong Chameleons side.

HARNESS RACING RAH A capacity crowd was on hand at the Vesey Street track on Sunday to witness the most substantial race card put on by the Driving Horse and Pony Club of Bermuda since the revival of the sport three years ago.

Fourteen races were held in time bars ranging from 1:35 and slower to the free for all and produced some interesting results.

The new driver/pony combination of Worrell Bean with his recently purchased Pleasant Surprise made a sparkling debut in the 1:25-1:34/4 bar. Surprise held off two strong challenges from Ell Dee's Mary Ellen driven by Joseph Viera to record winning times of 1:30 and 1:28.

Meanwhile, Ponder Babe (Daniel Greenslade) provided one of the day's major highlights when he raced out of his 1:19-1:24/4 bar to an astounding time of 1:14/2 in his second heat.

The first saw him start from the number three slot and just edge veteran campaigner Meadow Rose (Francis DeSilva) at the finish. This led to Babe occupying the rail for the second heat and again he blazed around to beat out Rose for the win.

Catch A Fire (Edward Matthews) upset track record-holder Nateway (Michael DeCosta) in the first race of the free for all, but the latter came back to reclaim his superiority the next time out.

Tina's Princess (Anthony Rego) made a grand entrance in the 1:16-1:18/4 bar and may not stick around too long if Sunday's performance is a true indication.

He won both heats against Penny's Rocky Road (Derek Cocklin) with times of 1:15 and 1:16, which means he already has one leg out of the time bar and a fast time next week could see him move up again.

Other double winners were J.B.'s Easter Prize (Mark Lindo) in the 1:35 and slower bar, Little Dinger (Annie Sousa) for the 1:13-1:15/4 `B' Division and Eddie The Great (Michael DeCosta) at 1:13-1:15/4 `A' Division.

Racing resumes next Sunday at 10 a.m.

RUGBY RUG Teachers 13, Police 11 A much improved Police team gave unbeaten Teachers a run for their money in the second half of this Second XV match on Saturday at Nationals.

However, Peter Booth saved the day for Teachers with two second-half penalties after indiscipline by the Police forwards.

Teachers, with a makeshift back line, wisely decided to play the game closer to their forwards' strengths midway through the second half. Police, strengthened by replacements Kim White and Jon Harris in the forwards, showed a lot more tenacity than in previous games.

At half-time the score was 7-5 to Teachers after a try by Craig Davis, playing his first game for Teachers this season. Police replied with a disputed try after Booth appeared to have grounded over his own goal-line.

This Police resurgence should give them more confidence when they take on Renegades next Saturday.

Renegades 15, Mariners 3 Dermot Caslin scored a decisive try after 35 minutes to give Renegades a 10-3 advantage at half-time. A very scrappy second half, inundated with disrupted scrums and flying bodies in rucks, gave spectators very little to cheer about.

Renegades, fielding a stronger back line than Mariners, showed good support in attack. Mariners adopted more of a spoiling game with Rod Carruthers and Peter Voss at the forefront of any physical exchanges.

Mariners pressured Renegaded constantly and although they had territorial advantage for most of the second half they had no finishing power.

Next week Teachers take on Mariners and the ever-improving Police face Renegades.

TENNIS TEN Experienced Davis Cup player Peter Van Lingen scored a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win over Anthony Baumer of New York in the Men's Open final of the Coral Beach Invitational on the weekend.

Van Lingen, who finished with three titles, also denied Baumer victory in the mixed doubles when he teamed up with Mary Henderson of Nashville, Tennessee, to beat Baumer and Kathy Stuhler 6-4, 7-5. Van Lingen completed a good weekend of tennis by beating Wally Stimpson in the men's 45 singles final 6-2, 6-1.

Baumer had something to smile about when he teamed up with local Stuart Smith to take the men's doubles crown over locals David Hyland and Tony Readwin 6-1, 6-7, 6-2.

Number two seed Donna bradshaw played brilliantly to defeat top seed Lynn Thompson 7-5, 7-6 in the Women's Open singles final while the men's doubles 45 final saw number three seeds Bruce Bernann and Don Thompson lose to number one seeds Victor Janzen and Joe Heffernan 6-3, 6-3.

In the women's doubles open a hard-fought match finally went to Donna Bradshaw and visitor Irmgard Fischbacher from Austria as they beat local Kelly Holland and visitor Alice Duff 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The women's doubles 40 final saw Mary Lenore Blair and Louise Stolitsky of New York outlast locals Gill Butterfield and Jan Quinn 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Blair then joined up with Bruce Bernann to win 6-4, 6-1 over Quinn and Dick Mount in the century mixed doubles final.

KARTING KRT Despite the threatening weather conditions the racing was hot and exciting as the Bermuda Karting Club held its races at the lengthened US Naval Annex track in Sandys on Sunday.

The 80cc juniors saw the introduction of four new drivers who have tremendous promise, judging by their first showing. Richard Wallington dominated the day's events, winning maximum points for his efforts.

Wallington was challenged at every turn by John Rawlins in only his second race day with a new kart. Gerald Saltus was ready to pounce on any errors from his position in third place.

The 100cc Open Class had a disappointing showing as Paul Telford did not start due to mechanical problems while David (Pops) Chisnall was abroad and Mark North failed to complete the first race. North was also not able to compete in the remaining races because of ignition problems. This opened the door for David Durham to collect maximum points from the day's races.

Jeffrey Benevides continued his winning ways, emerging as the owner of top points in the Yamaha Class with the 1991-92 class champion Edwin Wickham only managing a third place in points. He was put in that position by David Brewster whose tenacity in attacking the track gained him second place in points.

SWIMMING SW Champion boy William Massey of Sharks broke the only record during the third and final part of the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association Winter National Age Group Championships on Saturday at the BASA pool.

Massey broke his own record in the boys 11-12 years 50 metres butterfly with a new time of 31.49 seconds. Massey was the high point winner amongst the boys with 55 points while Laura Farge, also of Sharks, was the top points winner for the girls, amassing 56 points in the 11-12 age group.
