Police Club captured the Commercial League Division B crown at the weekend with timely victories over division arch-rivals Sousa's and Wildcats.

The three teams had finished the regular season with identical 12-4 records with the weekend sudden-death games used to determine the regular-season champions.

Police defeated Sousa's 14-6 in the first game and then edged Wildcats 14-10.

Shane DeMille, a stalwart on the Police rugby side, swatted a home run with four runs batted in while paving the way for the victory over Sousa's. Terry Thomas had three hits, including a double, in three appearances and drove in three runs. Timmy Hayward aided the cause with a pair of hits and two RBI.

John Fryer was masterful on the mound limiting Sousa's to six runs.

Sousa had trouble getting their offence moving, but did show some spark with contributions from Carlos Faries, who delivered two hits including a round-tripper, and Al Busby cracked a solid double.

Alan DeSilva was tagged with the pitching loss.

Police Club had similar offensive punch against Wildcats, this time led by Richard Basden and George Jackson, who each punched three hits. Basden blasted a towering home run and knocked in four home runs while Jackson had three RBI.

In the other weekend clash, PTB sewed up the final play-off spot in Division C with a sudden-death victory over Bacardi Bats.

PTB unleashed a powerful assault while scoring 19 runs over six innings while Bacardi could only notch four runs of their own.

Winning pitcher Shaun Tucker helped his own cause with three hits, including a home run and a double while driving in three runs.

Cliff Payne was another hitting star with a pair of hits, both of them going for extra bases, a triple and double. He also had three RBI.

The play-offs, meantime, got off to a soggy start when rain washed out Saturday's games. There are three matches scheduled for tonight. Snowballs take on Team Xerox in the Division A showdown while Alexander Insurance and Chips square off in the Division B tilt. Kempe & Whittle will play Marsh & McLennan in the Division C game.

SAILING SLG Bobby Beale, with two first-place finishes and a fourth, took full command of the Optimist Dinghy Racing at Sandys Boat Club on Sunday.

Beale and nine other sailors were forced to cope with frustrating conditions because of very light easterly winds.

The event comprised the final races for the Optimist Pram Cup, with Andrew Henderson, who finished fourth on Sunday, wrapping up first place overall with 25.75 points. Henderson was first after the opening race and then produced a pair of fourth-place results.

Beale was second overall in the race for the Cup with 29.25 points.

Travis Burland was third in the fleet with two thirds and a strong second-place finish on Sunday, and was also third in Cup standings on 30.25 points.

Sunday's fourth race was abandoned because winds were virtually non-existent.

Racing was equally keen in the second half of the fleet, with only five points separating Jeffrey Steynor, who finished fifth, and Aaron Carvelho, who was ninth.

In between were Joshua Simons, Lorenzo Lambert and Jason Simons.

Steynor was fourth overall in Cup standings on 35 points, followed closely by Jason Simons with 36.75.

The Oxford Cup racing series commences on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Andreas Lewin beat out nine other skippers to grab the L.F. Reid Cup during Laser racing at Mangrove Bay on Sunday.

Lewin, with two first-place finishes in the last of the five races, roared back to finish on top of the heap with nine-and-a-half points. His sudden surge enabled him to overtake Adam Barboza and Christian Luthi, who finished with 11 points.

Luthi posted his best showing ever in Mangrove Bay, losing out to Barboza for second place on a tie-breaker.

Malcolm Smith, who seemed well placed after three races with two first-place results, struggled late in the day to finish fourth on 12.5 points.

Light winds wreaked havoc, and the course was reset after each race.

Lewin continues to lead the race for the Commodore's Cup on 33.25 points, followed by Smith (41.25) and Brett Wright (44).
