Princess race celebrates 20th anniversary
Race celebrates its 20th anniversary this Sunday.
Launched at the start of the road running boom in 1978, the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club event has long been one of the most popular on the athletics calendar.
The race, over approximately 7.1 miles, has traditionally served as a warm-up for both locals and overseas runners for the annual International Race Weekend, this year scheduled for January 17-19.
Starting from the Hamilton Princess Hotel, the run has the toughest finish of any local event as competitors have to negotiate the steep climb from Middle Road up to the Southampton Princess Hotel before charging downhill to the finish line at Whaler Inn.
Defending champions are Kavin Smith, who ran away from the men's field last year to win in 37.54, and Jennifer Fisher who led home the women in 44.04.
The record is held by Englishman David Swanston who clocked a blistering 36.08 in 1989 when he was followed home by Smith in 37.32, still the fastest time of any Bermuda runner.
The women's record is held by Sandra Mewett who won for seven consecutive years between 1988 and 1994, her fastest being 41.32 in 1988.
Entries for Sunday's race close at 5.00 p.m. tomorrow although late entries will be accepted at an increased fee of $20. Forms can be picked up from and returned to Sportseller, New Winners Edge or the Pro Shop.
Race director Newton Adcock is hoping that many of those who have competed in the race over the years will turn out for the anniversary and has promised a number of special prizes as well as commemorative mugs and T-shirts for all competitors.
