Pros' absence gives others a chance

Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne and whether they should leave their English clubs now to come back and play for Bermuda in the World Cup is a ticklish subject.

I know what I'd do if I was in their shoes. My country would have to come first.

Having said that, I understand their side of it. Their clubs are going for promotion and they want to play.

But it gives other players like Steve Astwood, Rohaan Simons and John Barry Nusum a chance to play for us.

And it will be interesting to see what happens if those players do well. It's not easy to drop players when they've done a good job. And we wouldn't want to cause disruption among the team.

Looking ahead to Sunday and our visit to Antigua, our main objective for the first leg is not to get beaten.

With that in mind, it's possible we may change our tactics slightly and play with just one up front. Steve Astwood has played up front on his own before and he is capable of doing the job well.

Antigua are apparently saying they plan to field a team with players all aged between 17 and 20 -- but I'm paying no attention to that.

What I have learned about that part of the world is that things can change very fast. My main concern is with our own team and getting a good result.

With regard to my job, I am continuing to work with the national teams, doing the same things I did before my contract as technical director expired. I'm not sure what my job title is supposed to be, nor how long the arrangement will last. Let's just get through the World Cup and take it from there.

Last week in Panama, our under-23 team did well, but things just didn't go our way. I see that Panama and Cuba drew on Sunday, so if we had got something from the Panama game which we lost 1-0, we might have gone through.

I have to say the state of the field definitely did not help us. Every time we go away we seem to find a poor pitch to play on. It's a pity we can't pick up the surface at the National Stadium and take it with us! It had a bit more grass than the bad pitch we played on in the BVI, but it was very uneven.

There were divots all over it and it did not allow us to spray the ball about.

If you passed the ball along the ground, it could end up bouncing above head height.

But the players gave it their all and I'm pleased with them.
