Rams crash to Mariners

Group B come to a screeching halt on Saturday as they were beaten by newcomers Mariners at White Hill Field.

The home side, threatening for promotion in only their first season in the league, displayed renewed hunger in a 1-0 victory, after slumping the past three weeks.

Richard Correia increased his season tally to 13 along the way, as it was his second half strike that carried Mariners to the win, which allowed them to move within two points of Rams. However they remain three adrift of new leaders St. George's All-Stars.

St. George's were in glittering form for their match against a depleted Valley bunch missing several regulars.

Nevertheless, the east enders performed well in running out 4-0 winners, spurred by two goals from James Pace -- his 12th and 13th of the year -- together with one each from Cal Rayner and Sinclair Smith.

The standings now feature St. George's on 19 points compared to 18 and 16 for Rams and Mariners.

Picking up their first win in grand style were Wolves Pack, which made Devonshire Lions their first victims since joining the league for the 1995-96 campaign.

Pack did not merely triumph, but annihilated Lions 5-1 at the Den and moved from last place to ninth, ahead of bottom club Belco via superior goal difference.

Belco defaulted to Prison Officers despite it being their home game, while Bermuda Pest Control and Somerset Extros battled to a scoreless draw.

There were several top match-ups featured in Group A, with the top four teams playing each other. However despite this there was little change in the standings, with formerly fifth placed Devonshire Colts All-Stars the biggest winners.

All-Stars benefitted from the fact that all the teams above them drew, as they downing Island Rangers in a free-scoring affair in Dockyard.

At the end the score read 5-4 in favour of the visitors as Harrison Trott netted two goals and James Tweed, Marvin Campbell and Larry Benjamin one each.

Wendell Anderson tallied twice for Rangers, while Wolde Tansae and Joe Pacheco scored a goal apiece.

All-Stars thus crept to fourth from fifth, leapfrogging Robin Hood.

In the day's big affair defending champions Hood and immediate predecessors and current leaders BAA Wanderers fought to a 1-1 draw as Simon Turner and Darren Hope accounted for all the scoring in the first half -- Turner for hood and Hope for BAA.

Wanderers had a chance to seal victory in the second period, only for a missed penalty by Frankie Brewster to cost them.

Similarly, second-placed Forties were held 1-1 by Lobster Pot, third, as Ronan Daley gave Pot a first half lead which was erased by a Kent Bascome tally in the second.

A `barn burner' at Shelly Bay Field had Fire Service come from two goals down to take a lead of similar proportion, but likewise squander their position to rivals KPMG in a 4-4 draw.

Ralph Scott, David Malpas, Michael Rawlins and Allan Wilkinson scored for service, while Mark Breyers, Donnie Smith and Ian Rix (two) did so for KPMG.
