Rangers bounce back to complete double
(after extra time) Favoured Southampton Rangers made hard work of their opponents before two extra time goals finally enabled them to clinch the Second Division and Shield double at the National Stadium.
Throughout the match Prospect matched their opponents, and often dominated them, in every department before running out of steam in extra time. Prospect were rewarded for their determination when they took the lead in the 36th minute when a long ball upfield saw John Richmond work with Kenny Bartrum before slotting a low shot under 'keeper Bernie Woods.
The lead was no more than Prospect deserved, though the goal did bring out a new attitude in Rangers who lifted their game immediately.
Rangers had to wait just eight minutes into the second half to level the score through Garrick Williams from close range as Prospect were made to pay for an earlier miss by captain Lawrence Smith from a corner.
Prospect continued to hold their own and threatened with three quick corners midway through the half. Then Ryan Belboda headed over the top from a corner in the 80th minute as Rangers made a late surge.
However, Andrew Bissell almost won the match in the last minute for Prospect but his shot went wide of the near post.
Rangers finally settled the match in the second period of extra time when they took the lead for the first time three minutes into the final period through substitute Alfred Wolffe after Jason Raynor made amends for a miss minutes earlier by supplying the cross from the left.
The game came to a thrilling finish in the last couple of minutes as substitute Dijuan Simons made it 3-1 for Rangers and then in injury time Bartrum missed the chance of a second goal for Prospect when he scooped the ball over the crossbar after a penalty had been awarded for a foul.
"In the end it all came to,'' said Rangers coach Gary Darrell afterwards.
"For most of the guys this was their first time at the National Stadium and I couldn't believe how hyped they were. This was probably our worst game all season.
"There were a couple of games this season where we were fortunate not to have lost, like the Social Club game. But even here tonight they kept plugging away.''
