Rangers crush Bermuda hopes
Bermuda suffered a comprehensive three-goal defeat at National Stadium last night against the glittering ironmen of Glasgow Rangers and saw their hopes of reaching tomorrow night's International Youth Tournament final vanish.
The Island under-17 side needed to score at least two goals and at the same time limit Rangers to no more than a two-goal victory in order to have any chance of becoming eligible to qualify with the United States for the final.
But there was never any hope that they would pull this off against the unbeaten Scottish side.
Bermuda's loss, however, opened a clear passage for the US to enter the final against Rangers, who entered the match having already advanced.
Rangers built a 4-1 lead as early as the 49th minute with Bermuda only making the score look respectable with a late goal by Jabari Furbert after 87 minutes. Furbert had also scored their first goal after 38 minutes.
Full of exuberance and elegance Rangers carved out one opening after another, especially after Bermuda lost centre-back Raymond Beach to a thigh injury when the game was just 21 minutes old.
But Rangers struck before that, scoring their opener after 17 minutes when the crafty Steve Dobble had his defence-splitting pass find Steven Caullay who netted from close range. Three minutes earlier Caullay was unlucky when Bermuda's goalkeeper Zane Hendrickson advanced to dive and block his shot after breaking through the middle.
Looking keen and determined but playing ordinary soccer for lengthy periods, Bermuda were pinned down for most of the half as Rangers pushed powerfully forward with contemptuous coolness.
Caullay made it 2-0 after 31 minutes when he scored from 12 yards and then Dobble virtually put the result out of reach four minutes later when he raced down the middle of the defence to score on a breakaway to put Rangers ahead 3-0.
Just when one feared a walkover Bermuda struck with Furbert smartly heading home a ball from 12 yards seven minutes before the break to help revitalise his team's spirits.
But the second-half greeted Bermuda with further agony as Dobble made it 4-1 after just four minutes, putting the ball home after goalkeeper Hendrickson was unable to remain control of a pass back by a defender.
Furbert could have restored some enthusiasm had he not made a mess of a cross from Marlon Dill. Rangers substitute Olafur Snorrason made it 5-1 after 72 minutes.
