Rangers pose no threat to in-form Colts

Southampton Rangers bowed out of the FA Cup last night without mustering a single goal-scoring threat in this quarter-final clash at Devonshire Rec. that favourites Colts won handily.

Colts, who dominated play throughout but showed a glaring ineptness in finishing from inside the penalty box, had sufficient chances in the first half to put the result out of reach of Rangers.

They had managed only a single goal by the interval from Clevon Hill before adding two more when play re-started through Quincy Aberdeen and substitute Marvin Belboda.

Hill put Colts in full command after just nine minutes when Aljame Zuill raced down the right flank and crossed into the middle where Hill gratefully applied the finishing touch from close in.

As Colts called the tune for the remainder of the half, Zuill came close on at least four occasions, while hard-working midfielder Keenan Burchall powered a fine 20-yarder over after 40 minutes.

The best effort came from midfielder Vic Ball two minutes before the half when his 18-yard rocket was pushed clear by Rangers goalkeeper Randy Darrell. While Darrell was kept alert in his goal his counterpart Kevin Bean had a relaxing night -- thanks to the powder puff Rangers attack.

One of the busiest players was Rangers' centreback veteran Pernell Brangman who was often called upon to squash many spirited runs by Colts players.

While Rangers made some isolated attacks that always fizzled out, Colts remained a threat at the opposite end.

After 60 minutes Aberdeen scored after being put through the middle by Ball and then Belboda made it 3-0 after 70 minutes with the best goal of the game -- blasting home a fierce left-footer from an angle on the left from just inside the box.
