Records tumble in west end 10K
this month's May 24 Marathon Derby in Sunday's Maple Leaf 10K road race.
In the 14th year of the west end race, Anna Eatherley set a new mark in the women's division, clocking 37 minutes, 16 seconds, signalling her readiness for the big event, which is less than two weeks' away.
Sylvester Jean-Pierre was another record-breaker in the male masters (over-40) race, winning the category easily in a time of 34:29, more than two minutes ahead of his closest rival Calvin Steede.
And Harry Patchett shaved two minutes off Geoff Bell's record in the senior masters over-50s class to win in 37:05 ahead of Bill Ledrew, who also broke the former record in a time of 38:02.
The overall race ended in thrilling style with Kavin Smith holding off a strong challenge from Brett Forgesson to finish first in the field of 66 by just one second in 33:36. Canadian John Wassenaar placed third in 34:13.
Georgia Belboda was the second woman to finish in 41:53 and Jane Christie retained her title in the female masters division in a time of 43:16, ahead of Carol Griffith (49:30).
