Reds tame Mariners to win cup
challenge from Mariners to win 20-11 in rugby action.
In blustery, muddy conditions the Reds met and answered the challenge from the Greens in a game that many expected to be a replay of last year's 11-11 draw.
Reds speedster Heath Robinson put paid to an ordinary performance during the Sandys Boat Club tournament two weeks ago and found his wings. He ended an excellent passing series to score a converted try under the posts.
Declan O'Laughlin put Mariners on the score sheet with a penalty but Ross Webber extended the Reds lead by three with a drop goal to make it 10-3.
O'Laughlin was again on hand to score with his second penalty which burly prop Neil Alexander added to with a try just before the half. This meant that Mariners went into the break with a slim one-point 11-10 lead.
Kevin Harris kicked a penalty and Andre Simons had a converted try for Teachers during the second half which put the game out of Mariners' reach for good.
In the first match Renegades continued their winning ways when they beat Police 11-7.
Richard Willis scored first for Renegades with a penalty in the first half.
After the interval Police fired one back through a converted try from Calum Welsh.
Willis would not be outdone and his pass sent Pat Jones through in the corner and ended the game with another penalty to seal Police's fate.
Teachers second XVs won the Vice President's cup last Saturday with a 27-0 thrashing of Mariners. In the first game Police beat Renegades 22-8.
