Renegades beat edged Police 24-15.

An exciting tussle saw both teams show skills that were sadly lacking in the following day's games involving the supposedly superior first XVs.

Renegades, having a somewhat embarrassing surplus of good quality backs in their club, had Pat Jones and Tom Dixon -- normally regular first XV players -- to thank for 14 of their points.

Dixon's direct running also contributed to another try in the first half, which helped him win Amstel Player of the Week honours for the second time this season.

Police showed a lot of spirit and were courageous in defence in the second half even after Renegades substituted two injured players, national team members Mike Gorrie and Pat Bryan.

As expected, Renegades' backs took the ball at speed and outpaced their Police counterparts resulting in four tries through Nick Elwig (two) Jones and Dixon.

The first half score stood at 17-5 after Jones and Elwig's tries. Police replied with a try by Mike Devey.

In the second half, Police defended well against pressure from Renegades' forwards and came back to life when Colin Lund cleverly used a high kick to beat Jones, which resulted in a try under the posts.

Andy Wright converted the try and added another penalty, bringing the score to 17-15.

Ten minutes from time, Dixon sealed Police's fate with an individual try from 60 yards, beating two defenders with his lightning speed. Jones converted for the final 24-15 score.

The other scheduled match saw Mariners forfeit to Teachers.

SOFTBALL SOF Commercial League C Division co-leaders Cooper and Lines exploded for a mind-boggling 30 runs on Friday night at Bernard Park against Anfossi and Butterfield.

The final score read 30-7 with five runs coming off the bat of Cooper and Lines' Harold Aitken, who enjoyed a stellar night going four-for-five including four doubles.

Andrew Beek similarly had four hits to aid in the run chase.

Three other matches in Division C were played over the weekend and saw Showbizz remain in a tie with Cooper and Lines after they downed Marsh and McLennan 15-9.

Meanwhile, International Risk beat Kempe and Whittle 18-10.

Saturday had Division D take centre stage.

Centre Re was also successful in beating Business Systems 21-6.

BF&M won by default over Alexander Insurance.

Meanwhile St. David's evened their record at .500 as they demolished Arthur Andersen 13-4.

One other match pitted PALMS against Team Fashions and the former made quick work of their opponents, needing only five innings to realise a 16-1 victory.
