Revived Village out to burst Mark's bubble
standing after tomorrow's quarter-final matches.
The day's top match has last year's losing finalists Dandy Town making the short hop over to Bernard Park where they face a rejuvenated North Village outfit.
Spectators though should not pin their hopes on a goal spree as two earlier meetings between these two sides had failed to net a single goal.
However, a good sign has been indicated by each recently as far as scoring is concerned. Town gave new coach Mark Trott his first win on the top level with a surprising 3-2 win over of Somerset, while Village unloaded for four goals against St. David's during a midweek tussle in the Friendship Trophy.
Trott said that he expects Village to give his men a stern test.
"I watched Village the other night and they played quite well.
"It's apparent that come Sunday they will be very tough to beat.'' Village are still plagued by injury problems although the replacements have filled in admirably. World Cup squad members Shawn Smith, Philip Clarke and Kevin Grant have all been hobbled, although Clarke sat on the bench on Tuesday night.
In contrast Town are just about at full strength, with only forward Dennis Robinson scheduled to miss the match due to suspension.
Trott was understandably excited about the prospect of having a shot at the cup Town have won just once before, in the 1986-87 season.
"Outside of the league it is every coach's dream to be in an FA Cup final,'' said Trott.
Meanwhile, Boulevard, the hottest team on the Island at present, look the surest bet to gain passage to the next round as they entertain lowly Hamilton Parish, who reached the semifinals last year.
The Blazers have won six of their last seven games, including a 1-0 victory over defending champions PHC.
They possess a potential game winners in the form of Dwight Warren and Kenny Hill -- returning following a three-match ban -- while it would be difficult to find one such player amongst Parish.
Still coach Johnny Nusum was optimistic about his men's chances in a competition that is known for producing surprises.
"We're looking at changing our strategy a bit as there is only 90 minutes and it'll come down to taking chances,'' said Nusum. "We have to defend well and give our forwards the opportunity to put us ahead.
"Boulevard have so many weapons in so many areas. You shut them down in one area and they pick it up somewhere else...I was not excited when I found out we had drawn them.'' Also entering their match as favourites are Somerset, in search of a record 10th FA Cup title.
Playing at home, the west-enders have St. David's as their opposition and must be wary of the Islanders, who gave them a rough time in an earlier league meeting at Somerset.
Following the beating at the hands of Dandy Town, Somerset will have to regroup and find their focus.
"We've got to get back on track,'' said coach Larry Hunt. "Everything is looking positive this week. We've had two team meetings to discuss our direction and I'm hoping that the loss to Dandy Town has a positive effect on the players.'' The day's final match sees Hotels taking on Devonshire Colts at Southampton Oval with Robert Calderon making his debut as the new head `honcho' at Hotels.
