Rogers, Bean see off veterans
speed and youth, ended the quest of veterans Eugene Simmons and Nigel Daley during second round action yesterday.
Roberts and Bean moved through behind a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 result, but now have a tall order to complete if they are to maintain their record of always reaching at least the quarter-finals. This due to the fact that third seeds Mark Cordeiro and Eldon Daniels stand as their next opponents.
Simmons and Daley were certainly no pushovers, holding their younger opposition to serve throughout the first set, before falling in the tiebreaker.
The second set was on serve until Bean, though well placed at the net, hit an easy overhead winner long for the first break and the set to Simmons and Daley.
In the final set Daley, who held serve throughout the match, finally faltered, allowing Roberts and Bean a 4-2 lead. Roberts then held at 15 and Bean, after Simmons held in the crucial eighth gamed, closed the contest out with a searching backhand volley that split the net-rushing opposing pair.
Standing out from the match was the fact that Roberts double faulted nine times yet never lost serve, something he attributed to his partner.
"Craig is so good on the net...he's so fast,'' explained Roberts.
"That's what a partner's for, to pick up the slack when you break down.'' Yet, it does not always work out that way, just ask Daley.
"I was serving well throughout the match until the point where it counted most and I lost,'' said Daley.
Meanwhile, the combination of youth (Ryan Swan) and experience (David Lambert) proved to be too much for Larry Samuels and Grant Smith winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
However, their victory march will likely be short-lived, as they face Ricky Mallory and Sam Maybury in the next round.
Maybury warmed up in anticipation of the clash with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Bob Stevenson.
Mixed doubles action saw Barbara Lambert and Vidar Lunoe down Wendy Woodley and Charles Williams 6-1, 6-0, while Yuko Girard suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss at the hands of Natalie Nesbitt in B Division play.
