Invitational slowpitch softball tournament held at Bernard Park over the weekend.

Rubbernecks justified their promotion to the Commercial League A Division with a sparkling performance in the tournament final in which they defeated Bermuda All-Stars 9-6.

In their league debut the Americans had completely over-ran their opponents which led to their promotion to the A Division. But their results since haven't been spectacular.

However, over the weekend they demonstrated their full potential, taking advantage of some wild pitching by the Bermuda team to get virtually all of their base runners home.

The Bermuda All-Stars had survived all three games in the preliminary stage without losing, even getting by the Rubbernecks in the tournament opener. They also beat Canada and the USNAS Bombers.

Rubbernecks, meanwhile, progressed to the final by also defeating Canada and the Bombers.

The consolation final saw the Bombers hit three runs in the third inning on their way to a 6-1 defeat of Canada.

In the championship final Bermuda took an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the second. Rubbernecks were held scoreless until the third when they pushed two men across the plate.

In the top of the fourth Rubbernecks went ahead to stay as they smashed four runs, the key hit being a three run homer by Todd Fredrick.

The next inning saw the eventual winners get two more runs on a homer by Kit Mueller. Fredrick then hit his second homer in the sixth inning to give Rubbernecks a 9-3 lead.

Bermuda narrowed the gap in the bottom of the frame when they scored three times, highlighted by a two-run homer from James Pace.

The seventh inning was scoreless leaving Rubbernecks 9-6 winners.

First baseman Gregg Frigerio was voted the tournament's most valuable player.

He batted .643 for the entire tournament, having entered the final game with a .900 average. He contributed five homers and 12 RBI.

Bermuda's leading MVP candidate was Johnny Ray who batted at .636 with three homers.

The tournament is expected to become an annual event despite the disappointing spectator turn-out over the weekend.
