Rude awakening for telecom

Challenge Cup final at National Stadium when Rude Girls International handed league champions Telecom United their first defeat in four years.

The 5-3 result meant that Rude Girls scored more goals in this game than Telecom have conceded in the last two seasons. Both teams had many opportunities to score but Rude Girls were the much better team on the night.

College students Chevonne Furbert and Keeona Saunders provided a timely boost to the Rude Girls squad after being absent for their three league losses to Telecom.

Telecom were without the services of Debbie DeShields and Tanya Semos and were playing with two injured players, sweeper Lesley Cherry and midfielder Linda Hines.

Rude Girls had their first chance in the first minute of play with a hard shot from the right by forward Naquita Dill but it was deflected away by Cherry.

However, Dill made certain that her second chance in the fourth minute was put away. Rude Girls' central midfielder Kelly Trott passed the ball to Dill who took the ball down the right side, beat defender Zina Jones and then fired a rocket past goalkeeper Cassandra Trott to leave all the Telecom players stunned.

Rude Girls struck again in the 16th minute with a goal from Furbert. Trott continued to be her team's key playmaker as she constantly found Dill with passes. Dill took the ball down the right side and crossed for Furbert who headed it into the left side of the net.

Telecom had their chances but could not capitalise. Terry Lynn Paynter's corner was headed a yard wide by Cherry. Minutes later Paynter was three yards wide with a scorcher from 30 yards and forward Claudette Baisden pounced on a ball just outside the box only to see her shot saved by 'keeper Tanya Usher.

In the 36th minute it was Rude Girls who struck gold again. They were awarded an indirect free kick on Telecom's six-yard line because Trott picked up the ball from a back-pass. Furbert tapped the ball towards Dill who scored with a shot that took a deflection off a defender.

Telecom finally had their turn in the 40th minute with a well-deserved goal from central midfielder Janice Hankey. Paynter's shot was saved by Usher and Hankey pounced on the rebound only to see her effort come off the crossbar.

However, the ball went right back to her and she made sure at the second attempt with a well-placed shot to the left of the 'keeper.

At 3-1 down at half-time, Telecom faced a big task in the second half. At the start of the half they produced some good opportunities through Paynter and Baisden but the ball went wide on each occasion.

It was Rude Girls who scored again 25 minutes into the second half when Dill sent in a good cross from a corner on the right and Furbert connected to send a bruising header into the back of the net.

A minute later Telecom scored their second goal through a superb run and shot by Hankey. She took advantage of the space given to her by the Rude Girls defence and sent in a cracking shot from 25 yards, which hit the inside of the left upright before finding the back of the net.

Just when Telecom thought there was a possibility of a comeback Rude Girls scored again. Defender Dionne Burrows' lobbed ball had 'keeper Trott backpedalling but she did not get there in time to stop the ball going in.

With one minute left in the game Baisden scored Telecom's third goal in much the same way as Burrows' goal. She lobbed the ball over 'keeper Usher's head and she could only get her fingertips to it before it went into the net.

Telecom left their fightback too late, leaving Rude Girls to savour a much deserved victory.
