Rude Girls stay on course for cup win

which also marked their debut in the women's soccer league, Prospect were brought down to earth on Friday night by Rude Girls.

The defending league champions defeated Prospect 1-0 to go to the top of the cup competition standings after two matches. In Friday's other game Wolves Girls edged by PHC Teasers 2-1.

Chevonne Furbert of Rude Girls hit the post twice in the first half while Shernelle Smith of Prospect worked hard to create chances at the other end.

In the second half both teams had further opportunities but it was Furbert who broke the deadlock in the 60th minute when she beat two Prospect defenders before striking a 25-yard volley into the top right-hand corner.

Prospect fought back in search of an equaliser but were continually thwarted by a Rude Girls' defence well marshalled by Sakena Clarke.

Shernelle Smith was the player of the match for Prospect while Tanika White was the outstanding player for Rude Girls.

In the other clash, Wolves Girls scored twice in the second half to clinch a come-from-behind win over the Teasers who led after a seventh minute goal from Catherine Clarke. A mix-up in the Wolves defence allowed Clarke to tap in a simple goal.

Both teams had chances in the first half as Malelia Smith of PHC and Stacey Babb of Wolves made valuable contributions.

Wolves picked up the pace in the second half and levelled in the 65th minute when the hard working Wanette Thomas netted.

PHC should have regained the lead five minutes later when Clarke shot wide from in front of goal with only the keeper to beat. That miss proved costly as in the 81st minute Wolves scored the winner after the dribbling Thomas was fouled on the edge of the goal area.

Thomas took the free kick which hit the post and the rebound was tapped in by Junita Smith to give Wolves victory in their first tournament match. Thomas, of Wolves, and Clarke of Teasers were named players of the match.
