Saltus teens snatch road relay title
youngsters from Saltus Grammar School snatched overall honours.
Led by a blistering leg from anchor man Tyler Butterfield, the team, which called itself `Dem Der Push Peddlers' and included Chris Conway, Jonathan Herring and Mark Morrison, outran more than 40 others to win by over 30 seconds from a Bermuda Sub Aqua Club quartet.
Trailing in third place entering the final five and a half mile leg, 15-year-old triathlon star Butterfield quickly overhauled his two rivals to give Saltus an historic win.
It's the first time since the event began more than a decade ago that a school team have taken overall victory.
Over legs of two and a half, three and a half, four and a half and five and half miles, the Saltus team finished in one hour, 26 minutes, 55 seconds, with the BSAC Narks, led by a fast charging David Dunwoody, following in 1:27.38.
Jay Donawa had the fastest anchor leg of 24.40, but he was featured in a non-competitive team.
Butterfield had the next best time of 26.40 with Dunwoody clocking 27.00.
Athletics coach Steve Burgess gave his team, Bermuda Cedars, a flying start with the fastest first leg of 13.01, while Tracy Wright (16.44) was the quickest on leg two and Kavin Smith (23.02) fastest on leg three.
