School over the weekend, with 73 competitors vying for honours in two

Outstanding among the juniors was seven-year-old Justin Hutchings, who won the novice under-10 forms category and went on to take the novice forms grandchampionship as well as the fighting division.

Other junior forms grandchampions were Marcus Astwood (intermediate) and Katrina Phillips (advanced).

In senior black belt forms, defending champion Zenji Ingham retained his title while also taking the top spot in men's heavyweight sparring, but had to settle for second to Russet Edgar in weapons and lost via disqualification to lightweight winner Zachary Nesbitt in the grandchampionship.

Dominic Butterfield took first place in junior weapons and sparring in the 10-11 age group, while Shaun Dill was first in boys 12-14 sparring, with Talia Iris winning among girls in the same group.

Mark Watson, first in junior advanced forms under 12 and second in both weapons and boys 8-9 sparring, received the Sahaba Bushido Award for being 1997's outstanding junior, while Sensei Princeton and Jerry Bailey received awards recognising their support for the event.

Finalists are eligible to enter the WKO Pan-American Championships to be hosted by the Bermuda Karate Institute and the Bermuda Karate Organisation in November.

HARNESS RACING RAH A new trophy was presented in memory of David Mello when the Driving Horse and Pony Club of Bermuda held their annual prize presentation on Saturday at Ariel Sands. It was one of six new trophies and awards presented during the prize-giving.

Mello died of a heart attack during Boxing Day racing at Vesey Street. The David Mello Memorial Trophy was won by Miss L.L. Dane for the fastest time for a two-year-old and was awarded to Colin Mello.

Randy Wilkinson Jr received the Sportsman of the Year Trophy while Eddie Roque won nine awards with his two ponies, including most wins (45) and season high points driver with 226 points.
