Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championship at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.

But in the end it mattered little, as with only 32 players entered this year the entire men's field qualified for today's championship flight.

As players struggled in the blustery conditions, just two managed to break 80.

Luke Scrymgeour, a one handicapper from Calgary, Canada, carded the day's best score of seven-over-par 78, with two-time finalist Mark Dupuy next best on 79.

Scrymgeour is the younger brother of Rory Scrymgeour, who up until this year had been a regular in the Match Play event.

Defending champion Cy Kilgore turned in an 82 yesterday while 1997 winner Tim Carr fired 84.

In today's opening round of match play, Scrymgeour faces Belmont's Bobby McRonald who suffered yesterday's worst round of 97, while Kilgore takes on recently elected Bermuda Golf Association president Steve Perry.

A repeat of last year's final in which Kilgore defeated Dupuy three and two has been ruled out as both find themselves in the same half of the draw. Dupuy today faces John McManus.

In the women's medal round, Bermuda youngster Jennifer Spurling led the way in a field of 16, carding 86. Molly McNichols followed with an 89.

Spurling plays another local, Shirley Leach, today while McNichols meets Sue Farmer.
