Sevens squad suffer fourth loss
tournament in Punta del Este, Uruguay on Sunday, losing to Papua New Guinea for the second time in two days.
Having lost three times on Saturday -- 63-0 to Argentina, 59-12 to Germany and 41-5 to PNG -- Bermuda were relegated to the bowl competition where they again were drawn against PNG.
But despite, according to coach Kieran Peacock, putting up their best performance of the tournament, the Island team went down 40-7.
David Bird scored Bermuda's sole try after a close range penalty.
France headed the final list of qualifiers for the World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong in March after trouncing Western Samoa 35-14 to win the final of what was the last qualifying tournament.
The French and Samoans will be joined by Argentina, Japan and the Cook Islands after two days of action which continued past midnight local time to avoid the afternoon heat.
Scoring five tries to two in the final, France took full advantage of a first-half knee injury suffered by Samoa's best player, Brian Lima, but overall it proved a good weekend for South Pacific rugby.
The Cook Islands qualified after beating Argentina 17-12 in the pool stages and could progress further in Hong Kong where they have been drawn against Spain and Morocco.
Argentina scraped through only after beating Germany 49-12 in the plate final.
