Simons' late clincher lifts Dandy Town to top of table

Dandy Town 2 Southampton 1 Dandy Town moved into a two point lead at the top of the Coca Cola First Division last night when a deflected goal by top scorer Darron (Duke) Simons four minutes from the end secured the points at BAA Field.

For the second straight match Rangers went down to a late goal, their record now reading 3-2 after three straight wins.

But they were unlucky not to have taken a share of the points, coming back from a 1-0 half time lead to equalise in the 75th minute through top scorer Ascento Russell. Soon after he was denied a second goal when he shot against the near post.

Town, who led 1-0 in Sunday's match which referee Stuart Crockwell called off early in the second half because of the wet conditions, created the better of the early chances.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 42nd minute when the unmarked Reggie Tucker connected with a cross from the right by Smith to put a firm header into the back of the net.

Tucker, an inspiration in midfield, could not shake off a knee injury early in the second half and was eventually substituted in the 60th minute.

Rangers, their attack lacking, brought on the bustling Alfred Wolffe in the 74th minute and within a minute the game was all even when Russell followed up on a shot from Jerry Webb which took a deflection and scored with a low hard drive from close range.

Wolffe's aggression lifted the Rangers attack immediately and they still had a chance of snatching all three points as both teams went in search of the late winner that would put them in first place ahead of North Village and Vasco who could only draw their weekend matches.

Russell almost hit a second goal against his former team-mates when he followed up a blocked shot to get off a left-footed shot that hit the near post and went clear.

That miss proved crucial as three minutes later Town went upfield to score the winner that took them to the top of the tables for the first time this season.

From a corner on the right which was conceded by Pernell Brangman, Simons picked up possession on the near edge of the box and his shot took a slight deflection before beating Darrell at the near post.
