Skipper Lewin gets last laugh

skippered by William White, and Andreas Lewin's Contest grab one victory apiece in a shifty 10-knot breeze -- Contest rebounding to win the second race after almost sinking in the first.

By the first weather mark in the opening race, it was these two boats who were vying for first place.

As both approached the top mark of the second beat, Contest's jib halyard suddenly snapped, driving her bow under and almost sinking the boat.

Contest's crew fought frantically to save her as Port Royal secured the lead over eventual second place finisher Alan Powell in Victory .

Challenger (Paula Lewin) and Echo (Somers Kempe) were third and fourth, Malcolm Smith's Elizabeth fifth with Contest , bruised and bloodied, bringing up the rear.

But following a course change, it was Andreas Lewin who took control of the second race.

Contest tacked on the first shift and headed for the right side of the course, securing a lead she would hold to the finish.

In an interesting pile-up at the first weather mark, Port Royal hailed into the stake boat twice, forcing White and his crew to go head to wind to do two more tacks to round the mark.

Amid much shouting and confusion, there was some question as to whether Port Royal had actually hit the stake boat thereby disqualifying her.

While skipper White admitted that it was "close and ugly,'' he denied hitting the mark, and his statement was later backed up by the race committee on board.

Paula Lewin in Challenger , with a clean spinnaker set, was able to secure second place for the remainder of the race. Port Royal finished third, followed by Elizabeth , Echo and Victory .
