Smith brothers stun Stars
Western Stars 134 St. George's have firmly established themselves as the team to beat after another victory against Overs League champions Western Stars at Wellington Oval, this time by a whopping 136 runs.
All of the east enders' previous wins this season had come while batting second. On a damp wicket, Stars captain Arnold Manders put in the home team and it appeared to be a good move when Lionel Cann was dismissed in the second over.
But 43 overs later when the St. George's innings -- reduced to 45 because of a late start -- ended, Stars knew they faced a stiff task of matching the home team's total. The huge total was built around a century stand between Smith brothers Wendell and Clay who added 117 for the second wicket. Wendell, in his first knock of the season, hit 59 with eight boundaries while Clay continued his rich early season form, scoring 92 off 98 balls from nine fours and a six.
That takes Smith's aggregate in five innings to 411 runs, though he still hasn't reached the century mark. Sunday marks the second time he has been dismissed in the 90s.
After losing three wickets -- Wendell Smith, Jason Anderson and Mark Ray -- with the addition of just one run, Clay Smith was involved in another century partnership when he and Clevie Wade added 107 for the fifth wicket. Wade finished with 65, including five fours and four sixes.
Gary Brangman, Mark Trott and Hasan Durham all took two wickets, with Trott the most economical as only 37 came in his nine overs compared with Brangman's 57 and Durham's 55.
By the sixth over Stars were heading for their second straight defeat to the east enders as Cann claimed two wickets in his second over and another in his third to put the visitors in deep trouble at 9-3. Albert Steede, Hasan Durham and Cleon Scotland managed just eight between them.
Stars offered some resistance in the middle order with captain Arnold Manders scoring 26 in a stand of 38 with Treadwell Gibbons (13), while Ricky Brangman contributed 32 and Anthony Manders 37.
Cann finished with three for 26 off nine overs with three maidens while Ryan Steede took two wickets for seven in one over and Mark Ray two for 23 from six overs.
Willow Cuts 119 Bailey's Bay 122-3 Part-time bowler Dwight Basden was blasted for 25 in his lone over as Irving Romaine completed his half-century -- and victory -- by scoring 23 of those runs at Sea Breeze Oval.
After a single, Romaine tore into Basden with three sixes and a four to finish on 57 not out, including nine boundaries while captain Charlie Marshall was unbeaten on 28.
Ossie Hinds took all three Bay wickets to fall, giving up 35 in his six overs.
Willow Cuts struggled in the batting as, again, only two batsmen reached double figures. Richard Basden followed up his 54 the day before with 39 before he was ninth out while Dwight Basden scored 21.
Fifteen-year-old spinner, Steven Outerbridge, claimed four for 29 from six overs while Dennis Pilgrim took two for 22 and Anthony Braithwaite two for 32.
St. David's 194-8 Devonshire Rec. 185-6 Devonshire's slow bowling rate cost them four overs that eventually led to their downfall at Devonshire Rec when they lost by just nine runs.
After St. David's put up a respectable 194 off 42 overs, Devonshire were limited to batting 39 overs in reply.
Sammy Robinson led St. David's with a brisk 70 off 58 balls. Opener Chris Foggo chipped in with 24, Allen Richardson 21 and Landro Minors and O.J.Pitcher 12 apiece.
Lyle Millett led Devonshire's bowlers with two for 21 off eight overs, three of which were maidens while Winston Trott Jr had two for 37 off nine overs.
Devonshire fell short of their target, with spinner Del Hollis limiting them to five runs off the final over when they required 15 to win.
Skipper Anthony Amory topped their batting with 69 while opener Dexter Smith followed with whirlwind 59 including eight fours and three sixes.
Graham Fox took three for 35 off seven overs, with one maiden.
Police 257-6 Warwick 217 At Southampton Oval, Police were forced to sweat it out against Warwick before emerging with a 40-run victory.
In their chase of a target of 258, Warwick got spirited batting performances from Ritchie Foggo, who stroked 68 (six sixes and five fours), Stevie Lightbourne 42, Perry Scott 37, Daniel Caines 17, Trent Simmons 14 and Jeffrey James 13.
Rohan Moore led the Police bowling attack with three for 15 off 4.1 overs, including a maiden.
Ferdinand Thorne struck 84 not out for Police, including six sixes and five fours, while skipper Dennis Archer thumped 52, Tyrone Smith 44 and Daniel Reece 30 not out. Thorne and Reece added 100 for the seventh wicket.
Caines and Reginald (Lucky) Pitcher each took two wickets. Caines had two for 54 off 10 overs with two maidens while Pitcher had two for 47 off 10 overs, including four maidens.
