Washington where he took part in the seventh Miyagi Chojun Memorial Martial Arts Festival.

Highlight of the trip for Smith was obtaining a promotion to fifth degree black belt (Godan) following successful completion of his grading examination.

The extensive test began with a written exam on the first day followed by a five hour practical examination the following day. According to Smith this was not only a test of one's knowledge and ability but also of willpower and discipline.

The grading results were announced the following day and Smith described the promotion as his most satisfying accomplishment in martial arts.

"To have Master Aragaki on the grading panel made it even more special,'' Smith said.

The festival was presented by Smith's instructor, Master Morio Higaonna who is the Chief Instructor for the International Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate-Do Federation (IOGKF). The IOGKF is established in some 45 countries, many of which had representatives in attendance.

The festival centred around training under Higaonna and special guest Master Shuichi Aragaki who is one of the few remaining students of the founder of Goju-Ryu Karate, Miyagi Chojun.

Close to 300 martial arts competitors took part in the training which covered all aspects of traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu karate.
