Smith places 19th in junior Open
final round in the World Junior Open Championships in Scotland.
Smith's scores of 85, 86 and 77 at the tricky Craighead Golf Course, earned the Island 19th place out of 13 countries in the Gold category (for juniors with a handicap under five).
The Craighead course is controversially demanding, with its narrow fairways, knee-high rough and undulating greens.
Smith's high scores in the opening two rounds were the result of finding the rough too often, a problem he managed to iron out to some extent in Tuesday's final round on his way to shooting 77 -- considered a good score at Craighead.
The tournament, which featured players from 75 nations, was won by Sweden's top junior Stephen Jeppersen, with Rafael Cabrera of Spain finishing second.
The juniors, including Smith, will be guests of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, St. Andrews, during the British Open which starts there today, and they will meet some of the world's top players.
After his first experience of links golf at Craighead, Smith should be better prepared for his next tournament, the English Boys Championships in Formby, Lancashire, next week.
