Smith seizes Top 10 title
outclassing a stellar field during the Bermuda Table Tennis Association Top 10 Tournament.
Smith took the tables at Elliott School by storm, but it was not until the final match that he could breathe easy.
That ultimate encounter proved decisive, with Smith, at 5-1, entering in desperate need of victory against Phillip Hackett, who at was 6-0 poised for the title if able to win.
Hackett, as he had demonstrated throughout the earlier rounds, relied on a sound defence, using a mixture of returns in a fruitless attempt to keep Smith off-balance.
On the other hand, Smith utilised a variety of spin shots and a lethal attacking style to undo his opponent.
However, when the dust settled it was Smith left in the winner's circle following a 21-3, 21-19 battering of Hackett who was forced to settle for second based on head-to-head battles.
Earlier Smith had suffered his lone defeat, going down to 1994 winner Derron Trott in round four.
Trott (5-2) eventually placed second followed by Rawle Frederick (4-3), Dave Waltham (3-4), Monique Ternier 2-5), Mike Lindo (2-5) and Larry Marshall (0-7).
