Snipe Class regatta of the season on Sunday when they won three of the four

Smith's toughest competition came from arch-rival Stevie Dickinson and crew Lisa Richardson, who were racing on O'Kelly, a carefully restored 1950s vintage wooden boat.

Smith and Grayston needed to come from behind to take the first race, followed by Dickinson and Guy Eldridge, sailing with Maryellen Goodwin.

The second race featured a wild swing in the fortunes of racers, with newcomers Billy McNiven and crew Leatrice Roman and Carolyn Tytheridge and crew Andrew Rance taking full advantage of a port tack lift shortly after the start to grab an early lead.

McNiven held the lead for the first triangle, and at the end of the second stayed ahead of the solid trio of Dickinson, Smith and Eldridge.

Eldridge led at the end of the run and a late attempt to claim buoy room on Smith's part saw him on the losing end of a verbal tussle, which resulted in two penalty turns. In the end, Dickinson was able to nip Eldridge at the finish while McNiven slipped to third place.

The third -- and longest race of the day -- saw Smith demonstrate superior boat speed and his keen ability to spot windshifts in the waning breeze as he pulled out to a healthy lead. Dickinson held onto second spot for most of the race with Ray and Nancy Pitman in third. On the last beat Eldridge recovered to scrape past Dickinson and Pitman, setting up a final race with just one-and-a-half points separating the leaders.

Smith again showed the fleet a clean pair of heels in the shortened final race to clinch the series. Dickinson finished second to take second overall, while Eldridge passed Tytheridge on the final leg to take third in the race and third place overall. Pitman and Tytheridge tied for fourth overall, followed by McNiven and John Ridley.
