Social Club facing summons
Bermuda Cricket Board of Control to explain their reason for forfeiting a game for the second time this season.
On Sunday they failed to appear for their scheduled Knockout Cup first round match against Devonshire Rec. at Devonshire. On May 2 they failed to field a team for their season opener against Police at Police field, the same team they are scheduled to meet on Saturday in the first round of the Central Counties.
It appears the BCBC are keen to help the team with their plight rather than to just simply throw them out of the league without considering ways to offer assistance.
Board president El James said yesterday that he was concerned when situations like this occurred so early in the season. He noted the board would take every step to ensure that positive action was taken to assist the club rather than penalise them.
"We recognise the importance of cricket in the lives of our youngsters in the Island and if we do see a way of helping a team such as Social Club survive then we will strive to go for it,'' said the president.
"We are getting in touch with the club to check on their status. I would imagine that what happened on the weekend was as a result of circumstances beyond their control. But it is unfortunate and unfair for other teams who do make a sacrifice to come out and play against them only to discover that the scheduled match is not on.
"And it's also a bother for the field operators who have to prepare the grounds. We just want to find out what's going on with Social Club.'' Social Club showed up at Devonshire Rec. on Sunday with just four players, three of them junior players. Team official Webster Mills told the Royal Gazette after their season-opener no-show that a number of their players work in the hotels and had trouble getting away from work in time. He promised that the situation would improve.
On Sunday Social Club are again away, this time at Wellington Oval where they tackle St. George's.
