Somerset didn't lack confidence
name of Somerset's skipper Dexter Basden on that list.
"I knew it was going to be hard, but I was always confident that we would pull it off,'' said Basden.
Even during periods when the advantage weighed in favour of their opponents Basden was optimistic that Somerset would recover and get back on top.
"I was concerned at times when the overs were getting low, but Albert got us through with a good knock. It was a good team effort and a particularly great effort by Albert, my hat goes off to him. I just love to play with him, Bermuda does indeed have a good leader in Albert Steede,'' said Basden.
But losing captain Clay Smith was more specific about what occurred, claiming that he didn't think his team lost -- indicating that Somerset really won it.
"I don't think we lost it. But after scoring 252 runs in an hour and 20 minutes plus 20 overs they deserved it,'' said Smith.
"I take off my hat to them. Albert Steede was the one who was going to hang around and unfortunately he stuck in and got the job done for them. The game swung over the whole two days, the first day they dominated and today we got back in it first thing in the morning and then they came back towards the end and did what they had to do.'' Clearly disappointed at being a loser in his rookie year as skipper, Smith hopes fans haven't lost faith in him because he wishes to return next year for revenge.
But he gave his team credit for making this a memorable game. "If this doesn't do anything for Cup Match then nothing will. To Somerset, you worked hard for it and deserved it. I take my hat off to you.'' Roger Blades, reflecting on two Somerset players being struck on the head and taken to hospital, insisted that it wasn't hostile, intimading or anything intentional on his part. Struck were Glenn Smith and Eugene Foggo.
"I was happy to see both of them return, and it was good to see them come back fighting which was good for the game. Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt,'' said Blades.
"I decided to bend my back on the morning of the second day and this is what happened. There was a bit of life in the wickets, it was really fast and the batsmen got hit trying aggressive shots. The wicket was pretty dead on the first day though.'' Andre Manders, playing in his last Cup Match after 14 years, was excited about going out a winner--despite scoring a duck on the first day.
"I came into Cup Match a winner in 1982 and am now going out a winner, it's a great feeling. After I scored the duck I was pleased to come back and score 16 not out and strike the winning run on the second day,'' said Manders.
"My prayers were answered. After the duck on Thursday I went back to the hotels in the evening, took out my bible and said a little prayer. And it was indeed answered.'' SCOREBOARD SOMERSET v ST. GEORGE'S Somerset won by three wickets at Somerset.
