Spurling, Sims set hot pace

players ever to shoot under par in the same round of the Atlantic International Junior golf tournament which got underway at Belmont yesterday.

Spurling fired a superb three-under 67 in the 18-21 age group to pip Sims, the recent winner of the Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay Championships, by one stroke in the opening round of the 22nd annual tournament which has attracted 76 youngsters from Bermuda and overseas.

Former girls champion, Jameica Duncombe of the Bahamas, also started in fine fashion, carding a one-over-par 73 to lead Lindsey Sims -- Michael's sister -- by six shots in the 15-17 age group.

In the 15-17 boys age group, Matthew Durrant leads with a 74 and is closely followed by Keno Turnquest of the Bahamas on 76 and a host of others on 78 and 79.

Fraser Hunt leads the 13-14 boys after his opening round 79, one shot ahead of Aaron James and two ahead of Nick Dunkle.

Seann Harlingten of Bermuda fired a fine 79 in the 11-12 boys to lead Tim Burland by one stroke.

Play continues today at Mid Ocean before switching to Port Royal on Thursday and Belmont on Friday.

YOUTH CRICKET CRI Smith's 70 St. David's 72-0 Chris Foggo and O.J. Pitcher shared in an unbroken opening stand of 72 as St.

David's scored an easy 10-wicket win over Smith's in the Under-16 League.

Foggo scored 41 and Pitcher 21 as the winning total was reached in just 6.4 overs.

Smith's, fielding eight men, were restricted to 70 in 14 overs with Tyler Fox claiming three for 27 from four overs. There were three run outs. S.Dunkley was high man for Smith's with 17.

Smith's 66-6 St. David's 76-2 D.Borden scored 22 not out and Fiqre Crockwell 21 as St. David's wrapped up a comfortable eight-wicket win over Smith's in the Under-13 League.

The match was reduced to 16 overs per team because of the late start and Smith's were led in their total of 66 by 21 from B.Gibbons. Crockwell claimed two for 20 off four overs.

ANGLING FSH Organisers of the Bacardi Rum Angling Tournament are hoping it will be third time lucky when they try to stage the event this Sunday.

They have twice been hit by bad weather and a repeat of unfavourable conditions this weekend will cause the cancellation of this year's tournament.

The tournament is now an open event, meaning that there is no need for further registering or reporting of boats and anglers. All boats and anglers will be classified in accordance with the original official regulations when they arrive at the weigh-in station at Dockyard Wharf.

The awards ceremony is shceduled to take place at The Surf Club on Saturday July 11.
