St. David's end slump with emphatic cup win
season when they scored an emphatic 97-run win over North Village in the opening round of games in the League Cup on Sunday.
St. David's, with only two draws in five league games under their belt, piled up 211 in their Group B match at Lord's and then dismissed Village for 114 while in Group A West Indian Association cruised to a six-wicket victory over eight-man Devonshire Stars at Warwick Secondary.
Dale Lamb and Glen Fox rescued St. David's with a sixth-wicket stand of 94 after the East Enders had been tottering at 59 for five.
Lamb struck nine fours in his 73 from 75 balls while Fox made 35.
Other useful contributions came from Albert Fox with an unbeaten 29 while Craig Cannonier made 24 and later chipped in with two for 20.
Top bowlers for Village were Sherwin Hollis who grabbed four for 30 in 4.3 overs and Derek Bell who took three for 21.
Village began their reply strongly with David Scraders scoring a run-a-ball 36 and at 66 for one they were well placed.
But left-arm medium pacer Robin Minors wrecked Village hopes with four for 12 in five overs and evergreen Elliott Pitcher completed the demolition job with three for four in two overs, Village losing their last five wickets for only 16 runs.
Hewvonnie Brown cracked three sixes and two fours in his 40 but from a promising 96 for two Devonshire Stars subsided to 127 all out in the 38th over against West Indian Association, who lost to Sandys Sports Club in last year's final.
The handicap of fielding three short proved too great for Stars and WIA, with useful contributions from Patrick Hamlett (29) and John McConnie (25 not out), coasted home with 16 overs to spare.
