Stars too strong for New York tourists

Saturday against the visiting Villagers Pacesetters Athletic Club, beating the Brooklyn-based team by 39 runs at St. John's Field.

It was the first time the trophy had been played for since 1994, but the teams now plan to resume their annual matches with Stars sending a team to New York next year.

In the Stars innings of 146, Gary Brangman was high man with 35 not out while Jermaine Postlethwaite scored 30 and Andre Manders 20. Byron Brown claimed three for 35.

At one stage Villagers were comfortably placed at 83-3 but collapsed to 97 all out as spin trio Dwayne Leverock, Arnold Manders and Hasan Durham all claimed wickets. Leverock took three for eight from seven overs and Manders and Durham two apiece while Gary Brangman and Diallo Sharrieff also had one each.

In the Villagers innings, Habelock Hall was top scorer with 30 while captain Keith Sang scored 20.

The tourists bounced back to snatch victory against Social Club on Sunday in the final match of their short tour. Villagers scored 262 all out from 40.3 overs and won by 161 runs, although at one stage they were in deep trouble at 58-5.

Andre Hooper, cousin of former West Indies batsman Carl Hooper, led the fightback with 72 before retiring while Ossie Champenny scored 31. The pair added 100 runs for the sixth wicket.

Others contributing with the bat were Byron Brown who scored 31 before retiring, captain Sam Belnavis with 22 and Vern Mathison 31.

Cecil Tucker claimed two for 30 and Carl Furbert two for 48 to take bowling honours for Social Club.

Tucker was also in good form with the bat, stroking 45 while opener Webster Mills scored 20. At one stage Social Club were 72-2 before being all out for 101. Sam Belnavis claimed three wickets for no runs in two overs of medium pace while Hugh Pitter took two for 14.

The visitors, made up mostly of players from Jamaica and Guyana, also brought a netball team who played two matches on the weekend.

In the opening match on Saturday the visitors beat Commercial League team Canadian Pacific Royalties 53-23 before going down 43-26 to a Bermuda Select on Sunday.

In the first game the tourists led throughout, 11-6 after the first quarter and 25-11 at the half before taking a 39-16 lead into the final quarter.

They held an early lead against the stronger Bermuda Select, too, leading 9-8 after the first quarter. But once shooter Debbie DeShields started to find her range, Bermuda took charge, leading 21-16 at the half and 35-19 at the end of the third quarter. DeShields finished with 33 of the 44 goals.

The netballers are also interested in a reciprocal arrangement. Bermuda Netball Association president Penelope Henry confirmed that the BNA were looking into the possibility of sending a team to New York next year with Western Stars' cricket team.

The weekend matches preceded the new netball season which begins on the weekend of October 8/9.
