`Sticks' aims to topple former champ

Three-time former champion Dunleavy advanced with a 3-1 win over Michael Tatem. The match will be a replay of the 1988 final in which Dunleavy beat Henderson 4-2. He also won the final in 1986 and '89.

Henderson narrowly got by Stephen Roberts 3-2 making great long pots on the brown and blue in the deciding game. He is coming off his best year ever in the league, sporting a 16-0 record and the season's high break of 53.

Nationals' Tony and `Bushes' DeSilva advanced to the doubles final by beating Dave McLean and Bill Wotton 2-1. They will play Old Colony Club's Brian Haxton and Phil Lambert who squeezed by Dunleavy and Andy Wright, winning on the black in the third frame.

Both finals will be played at Spanish Point Boat Club this Saturday starting with the doubles (race to three) at 5 p.m. followed by the singles (race to four). The public is invited and admission is free.

Meanwhile, Old Colony Club I and Queens II secured berths in this year's league playoffs tonight. In the first round OCC will meet Sandys Sports Club at Queens while Queens will play Nationals at OCC.

OCC secured their place in the final with a last minute whitewash of Warwick II 6-0. Phil Lambert made the high break of 20 for OCC. OCC's captain Robert Gaglio clinched the First Division aggregate trophy when he finished with a record of 14-2.

First Division champions Nationals edged Warwick I 4-2 on the strength of wins from Paul Charleton, Tyler Moniz, Tony DeSilva and Stephen Pantry. Wally Tucker was named First Division player of the week for his 50-44 win over Mike Tatem while Dunleavy scored Warwick's other point with a 23-break. In the other First Division match Police took a 4-2 win over Queens. Tim Carr led Police by making a 22-break in beating Andy Peniston 63-24. Other Police winners were Darren Hall and Billy Tempest-Mitchell while Greg Falzone and Tony McWilliam won for Queens.

Queens II clinched a playoff spot when they defeated St. George's 4-2. Nick Mansell, Chris Dakin, Paul Doidge and Mike Zimmerman won for Queens with Zimmerman edging `Honky' Burrows 47-45. Shaun Bleeker won the only frame for St. George's.

Gary Skinner was named Second Division player of the week in leading champions Sandys Boat Club to a 4-2 win over Spanish Point Boat Club I. Skinner had breaks of 15 and 14 in winning over highly reagarded Stephen Roberts 76-41.

Zane DeSilva, Sticks Henderson and Timmy Pedro also won for Sandys.

Stanley Wright upset David DeSilva for SPBC and Roberts took the high break with a 17.

OCC II finished the season on a high note as they took a 5-1 match over Spanish Point II. Stanley Mocklow, Dennis and Will Coyle, Stan Fearis and Bobby Miller won for OCC with Miller coming out of retirement to win his only game of the season. Eddie Roberts spoiled the shutout with a high break of 17.
