Swimmers win medals
individual medals over the past weekend at the Waterloo Invitational Meet in Canada.
Scott Simmons and Ronald Cowen led the haul with seven medals between them as Simmons captured two gold and Cowen two silver medals.
Simmons, swimming in the boys 13-14 year age group, hit gold in the 50 metre freestyle and 100 metre breaststroke and one bronze in the 100 metre freestyle. He also narrowly missed a second bronze with a fourth place finish in the 200 metre individual medley race.
Ashley Robinson, swimming in the girls 13-14 age group, achieved her bronze medal in the 50 metre butterfly event.
The boys 4x50 metre freestyle relay team also got amongst the medals as Roy-Allan Burch, Scott Simmons, James Cowen and Kevin Fox won bronze. Burch narrowly missed standing on the medal podium with two fourth place finishes in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle events.
Cowen, swimming in the boys 15 and over age group, seized two silver medals in the 50 and 100 metre freestyle as well as two bronze medals in the 200 freestyle and 200 IM. He also had a fifth place in the 100 metre backstroke event.
Graham Smith, swimming in the same age group, set a new Bermuda age group record in the 50 metre breaststroke event, however his performance only earned him a fifth place finish. Smith also finished just out of the medals with two fourth places in the 50 metre freestyle and 100 metre breaststroke.
Smith also added two sixth place finishes to round out an outstanding performance. Michael O'Connor also just missed a medal with a fourth place in the 50 metre backstroke.
In the boys 11-12 age group, Stephen Kenny captured one silver medal in the 100 metre freestyle and one bronze medal in the 200 metre butterfly. Kenny's time in the butterfly set a new Bermuda age group record and he completed a busy weekend with four fourth place finishes along with a sixth.
Cameron MacDonald, swimming in the same age group, garnered his silver medal in the 50 metre backstroke along with a fifth place in the 100 metre backstroke.
In the same age group, but on the female side, Chelsea Burns finished sixth in the 50 metre breaststroke while teammate Melanie Fullerton earned the sixth spot in the evening finals of the 50 metre freestyle. Unfortunately she could not improve on her position in the final.
The BASA schedule continues this weekend with the second of three Spring Series meets.
