Teachers lift Cunningham sevens title
victory in three years at Nationals on the weekend.
In the final play of the game against Police, Kevin Harris' penalty kick limped over the crossbar and that gave Teachers the narrowest of victories, 15-14.
The Reds ultimately won the event with a superior points difference but they had to wait patiently until the final game between Renegades and Mariners, in which Gades needed to score 49 points to eclipse Teachers' total.
Renegades fell just six points short in their 43-7 rout after a tremendous nailbiting finish in which Tommy Trinder and Dominic Sommers played their hearts out.
Police had earlier waltzed past Mariners (19-0) and Renegades (22-7) but found Teachers too hot to handle even though the Reds had showed poor sevens skills in their 10-7 loss to Gades in the first game.
For Police, Dave Bird and Gareth Davies were outstanding with Alan Oliver giving some lessons in drop kicking goals while Shane Richmond was the top try scorer of the day with four.
Even though Mariners were never really a threat, they received an excellent contribution from Mark Ladyman who showed great fitness and tackled superbly.
Teachers had the highest score difference of the day, beating Mariners 43-5 with Patrick Cooper and Alvin Harvey in fine form.
In the Second Division event, Police walked away with the title, winning all of their games.
