Teachers try to overcome Hurdle

aiming to sharpen their performance this time around in the 11th annual Denton Hurdle Memorial rugby game.

Costly defensive errors led to their 33-25 loss in that previous encounter and Teachers will be out to make amends against what amounts to a Bermuda Rugby Football Union all-star team.

The game is held in honour of Denton Hurdle, a fullback for Teachers who died in 1985 at age 28.

"He was a well-liked and well-respected player who played the game for all of the right principles but unfortunately he died at a very early age, certainly at the prime of his playing career,'' said national rugby coach Keiron Peacock.

Despite having to go against a formidable Rest team without Scott Correia, Patrick Cooper and Alvin Harvey -- who remains injured from the Bermuda national team trip to Uruguay last month -- Teachers appear capable of winning this clash at Nationals, which starts at 3.30 p.m.

They have a well-drilled pack of forwards and are well organised in the back line, which is marshalled by Andrew Correia at scrum half.

Ross Webber at fly half and Mike Montgomery at fullback are solid in their positions and will play prominent roles in helping to spearhead the team along with their quick winger, Heath Robinson.

But under Peacock, the Rest squad will not be easy opponents and themselves form a prominent force with a quality player like Danny Forsythe expected to play at prop after having had a long lay-off through injury.

They have a strong back row that consist of Shawn Field, Rob Stewart and David Bird and then in the backs there are steady performers like Phil Heaney and Neville Ross who are both attacking footballers.

Teachers go into the contest slightly favoured simply because they are a unit that has trained regularly among themselves all season while for their opponents it's a one-off game. They have only had one training session together in order to familiarise themselves.
