Tempers flare as Colts knock Village off top

Devonshire Colts moved into a three-way tie for first place in the First Division while North Village slipped from first to fourth following a match of frayed tempers at White Hill Field yesterday.

Despite some impressive soccer from both clubs, the game was marred by violence right on the full-time whistle.

As if it wasn't a dark enough day due to the inclement weather, matters were made worse when an altercation between Colts' Aljame Zuill and Village's Jemeiko Jennings triggered mayhem on the field which also carried on into the changing rooms, involving players from both teams.

No bookings or red cards were issued but referee Leroy Wilson confirmed he would be submitting a report of the incident.

The first half saw some good, controlled soccer from Village, especially in their midfield. They were also not afraid to shoot, often firing attempts from 30 yards out. The half, however, ended scoreless.

Colts came more into the game in the second half and they thought they had scored in the 60th minute but the effort was disallowed because of a foul on Nyon Steede in Village's goal.

But they made no mistake in the 85th minute when Keishon Smith followed up a rebound from substitute Ray Jones' shot to slip the ball home from four yards out.

The only card of the game was a yellow for Makonnen Hollis after a hard tackle on Elliott Jennings in the 82nd minute.

Dandy Town 0 Southampton 1 Dandy Town paid dearly for failing to turn their superiority into goals as their first league loss denied them the chance to move into a tie for first place in the standings.

The winning goal at St. John's field was scored 12 minutes from the end as substitute Travis Wilkinson finished off a good move involving Craig Darrell and Sheridan Ming when he met Ming's cross at the far post to beat Jason Smith in the Town goal.

Town dominated the first half and much of the second but failed to convert their opportunities.

"I would say 80 of the 90 minutes we dominated,'' said a disappointed Town coach Mark Trott afterwards.

"It was disappointing because of the result but from a footballing point of view we played really well. We just missed too many chances and at the end of the day it came back to haunt us.'' The loss dropped Town from second to fifth in the standings, but they are still just three points out of first place.

"We are just one match from being in first place and it is also only the third game of the season,'' added the coach.

"If we can play like this and convert our chances we'll be in business. To Rangers' credit they absorbed any pressure that was thrown at them and got one real chance and showed us how to finish.'' Somerset 2 Boulevard 1 Boulevard's woeful start to the season continued on Saturday night when they went down to the Trojans who scored their first goals of the new campaign.

Andrew Rahman opened the scoring for the home team and a second by David Burchall gave Somerset a 2-0 lead at the half. Boulevard scored a consolation goal in the second half when Kenny Darrell converted a penalty.

KEISHON SMITH -- his goal five minutes from the final whistle gave Colts victory.
