Most of the attention, however, was focussed by Alan Williams and crew Tony Knapp and Terry Neff aboard Papers , early in the first race. They tacked onto port to clear their air and failed to break free of Fugly , with Billy McNiven, Gary Roman and Jeffrey Burgess aboard.

Fugly's bow became hooked in Papers backstay and the two performed a noisy pirouette while Flame , with Stevie Dickinson, Michael Tatem and Dennis Correia, which has been serving as Fugly 's weather quarter, was left with nowhere to go and shot up between the protagonsists tearing Fugly 's jib in the process.

When the smoke cleared Jack Outerbridge's Cedrene V with crew Francis Carter and Paul Bailey led at the first mark followed by Morning Glory and Critter , helmed by Brett Wright with crew David Kuhn and Guy Eldridge. Cedrene V eventually slipped to third place while Morning Glory held off Critter to win the race.

Derek Ratteray's Lazarus , along with crew Kevin Blee and Paula Lewin, showed bursts of down wind speed to finish fourth.

The breeze settled somewhat for the second race as Papers led around the course from the first mark. Fugly and Flame were also able to find a little better air to the left early on the first beat and had a close race for second, with Flame prevailing.

First race leader Morning Glory was forced the wrong way early and had to settle for fourth.
