The title race remained tight in the Bermuda Ladies Hockey Association `A' league with the top teams both recording victories over the weekend.
The methods were different, but the same goals accomplished as Coca-Cola Cardinals A were put to the test during a 1-0 victory against PHC Canaries, while North Village Longtails ran roughshod over Police Orioles in a 6-1 hammering.
Jobs Verkaaik scored the only goal in the Cardinals-Canaries match that saw the former working well as a team, with some well orchestrated build-ups and fine passing.
Meanwhile, Lisa Rawlins led the way for Longtails in their rout of Orioles and aided by single tallies from Lisa DeSilva, Sharon Smith, Donna Rawlins and Joanne Wilson.
Marcia Ford registered the lone strike for the losers.
Action in the B League had PHC Canaries B down Coca-Cola Cardinals 3-1 with all four goals coming in a torrid second half of play.
Sam Miller (two) and Janice Maughn found the back of the net for Canaries to more than offset a score by Cardinals' Julie Monks.
Also, league champions Bluebirds drew with Police Orioles B 1-1.
YOUTH SOCCER SOC The Saltus Invitational Junior Soccer Tournament hosted by Saltus Cavendish was a rousing success on Saturday and saw the home team emerge victorious.
The tournament consisted of eight teams of 10 members with boys ranging in age from six to eight.
Play was in two groups with PHC going undefeated in group `A', having beaten Southampton Rangers, Saltus `B' and Port Royal `A'.
Saltus performed a similar feat in the other section, counting PHC `B', Port Royal `B' and Devonshire Colts among its victims.
A closely fought final between the two group winners ensued.
In the end, Saltus, under the expert guidance of former English Second Division player David Connelly, gave a very disciplined display to win 1-0, with a goal by Henry Talbot proving the decider.
The playoff for third place honours had Southampton beat Colts 2-0, while PHC `B' edged Port Royal `A' 4-3 for fifth.
DARTS DRT Last Friday was a night of perfection in the Ladies Dart League with no less than three players notching scores of 180.
Jean Clark, Marilyn Lewis and Sheila Willoughby each could do no wrong as they made easy work of their opponents.
Clark had Terry Cartwright become her unwilling victim, defeating her 2-0, and helping league leaders BAA to a 6-1 thrashing of second-placed RAA.
RAA now trail BAA by nine points, who are 12-2 overall, compared to their record of 10-4.
Meanwhile, Lewis was `deadeye' in the 1001, aiding her team, St.George's II in a similar 4-3 triumph over BPSA.
Willoughby also registered her top score in the 1001.
In other matches on Friday, Mariners downed Hamilton Parish 5-2 and St.
George's I struggled past East End Mini Yacht Club 4-3.
Friday's schedule: St.George's I v Mariners; Hamilton Parish v EEMYC; St.George's II v BPSA; RAA v BAA.
ATHLETICS ATH Plans by the Bermuda Track and Field Association to stage a youth camp at Paget Island on last weekend was postponed because of the bad weather, but officials have announced that it has been rescheduled for March 26-28.
Stanley Douglas, president of the BTFA, said yesterday that 20 youngsters in the 12-19 age group had signed up for the event on the weekend but explained that additional space was available to accommodate as many as 30. A fee of only $10 is being charged for the two-day camp.
"The unique thing about this camp is that emphasis will not be placed on athletics alone. We are trying to stress that the same energy is needed to mould their lives as they use to develop as a good athlete,'' said Douglas.
"While they will be working on ways to improve on techniques for their respective events, the athletes are urged to bring their school books as there will be a study period of about two hours on each evening,'' he added.
Steps have also been taken to secure individuals to speak on nutrition and physical fitness.
Any additional athletes interested in attending the camp are urged to contact Mr. Douglas at 236-4476 during the evenings between 6-8.00.
