Three see red in Rec debacle
Who'd be a referee? First, you turn up for a match and find out your linesmen haven't.
Then two kindly souls offer their services and so against your better judgement you agree to start the game.
Shortly after kick-off things get a bit tasty and you threaten to call off the whole thing. Coaches and players protest and because of the backlog of matches caused by the last referee's strike you feel duty bound to continue.
For a while everyone behaves themselves, but just as you think you're out of the woods, tempers flare, fists are raised and the number of red cards outnumbers the number of goals.
Just another 90 minutes in the life of George O'Brien.
For those who are interested Wolves won 2-0 -- Mark Ray, one of those to enjoy an early bath at Devonshire Rec last night, and Nakir Smith ensuring Rangers remain adrift at the bottom of the table. Ray could also afford the luxury of missing a second-half penalty.
But the football seems all so insignificant when compared to the almost childlike debacle the game descended into.
First to see red was Rangers' striker Janeiro Tucker. Carded for retaliating to a clumsy challenge, he then let forth a torrent of vitriol at O'Brien and was inevitably dismissed.
His last act was to launch the ball into the car park -- sadly it was not within the referee's remit to insist he went and fetched it.
That was after 64 minutes, but worse was to come nine minutes from time.
O'Brien awarded a free kick to Rangers just outside their opponents' box and as players from each side debated the legitimacy of the decision, all hell broke loose.
Something certainly upset Rangers' Temiko Flood who threw a haymaker in the direction of an opponent. That caused a free-for-all into which Ray got himself involved.
Members of both benches rushed onto the pitch, and O'Brien did well to re-establish a semblance of order before sending the two aggressors off.
Thankfully the match was brought to a conclusion without any more trouble -- whether there'll be any more in store when the BFA get the referee's report remains to be seen.
