Tiger tops tourney wanted list
Some of the biggest names in golf have already been confirmed for October's inaugural Gillette Tour Challenge at Mid Ocean Club.
But organisers remain intent on getting the biggest -- Tiger Woods.
Tournament chairman Michael Dunkley insisted yesterday that Woods was still the number one target, and while his name hadn't yet been added to the official entry list, he believed the world's top ranked player -- he displaced Greg Norman after Sunday's US Open -- was genuinely interested in competing.
"We feel we've got a good a shot at getting Tiger,'' said Dunkley. "We're working hard to ensure that he joins the field. And from the conversations we've had we know he's interested in playing.'' Woods would be one of the sponsors' automatic exemptions for the October 7 event which will involve 24 of the world's top players -- eight each from the PGA, PGA Senior and LPGA Tours.
But even if he doesn't appear, there'll be plenty of household names among the field.
Already inked in from the PGA Tour are Americans Fred Couples, Craig Stadler and Payne Stewart as well as Zimbabwean Nick Price.
Stadler, making his third consecutive appearance, won the final Merrill Lynch Shoot-out Championship at Mid Ocean last October, while Stewart also played in that event.
Price has visited the Island on a number of occasions, at one-time on a house-hunting expedition, but has never played in a tournament here.
Big names from the Senior Tour include Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino, Jim Colbert, Bob Murphy and Walter Morgan.
And from the ladies tour, current world number one Annika Sorenstam of Sweden and former number one Nancy Lopez have both confirmed their entries.
The tournament will be preceded by a blind draw to determine the eight threesomes, each with a player from the three Tours.
Those teams will then play over Mid Ocean's full 18-holes on a better-ball format, unlike the Shoot-out which saw only nine holes played and one golfer eliminated on each.
From the two men's tours, six players are being invited while two will qualify.
The eight ladies will be made up of the three top money-winners on the LPGA Tour this season, two other qualifiers and three sponsors' exemptions.
Dunkley admitted that because of the expense of bringing in so many top players, an admission fee would be charged.
"We're going to be selling tickets for $25, which we think is pretty reasonable,'' said Dunkley. "There's no doubt this is a class field, probably the best Bermuda's ever seen.''
