Top names shy away from soccer's transfer market

Soccer transfer numbers will be down considerably from previous years, as the release period has come and gone.

And there will be further disappointment for those players who think there will be a late release period, as June 15 was the deadline for players to obtain releases from the clubs they were with last season.

The Bermuda Football Association has confirmed there will be no late release period, as the transfer period is now in effect for those making their choices of new clubs. The deadline for transfers is July 31, again with no late period.

The official list of releases issued by the BFA contains 76 players who are intending to move from First Division clubs and 50 from Second Division teams.

With most of those players being fringe players the list actually contains few prominent First Division players. Also, those players who have already obtained releases can still remain with their present clubs.

The transfer process has begun slowly with most of the big name players expected to take their time making their choices for new clubs.

That includes Bermuda national team goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams who is leaving relegated BAA, though his new club remains a mystery. Former club North Village and Vasco have both been mentioned, but Adams is saying little about his next move.

BAA could lose as many as 18 players while Devonshire Cougars, their relegation partners, have 14 players seeking releases.

In those lists, BAA have five from their First Division squad -- Adams, Treadwell Walker, Troy Harvey, Craig Critchlow and Andre Thompson -- while Cougars could be without captain Shawn Smith, Stephen Coddington, Troy Smith, veteran Dale Russell, Dwayne Bean and George Dyer as well as Marlon Lindsay, Darrid Durrant, Jamal Salaam, Curtis Azhar and Troy Smith.

Smith has been linked with Vasco while Russell, Azhar and Bean are rumoured to be moving into the Commercial Division.

FA Cup champions Vasco again appear to be the club of choice for some of the top players, as Dennis Robinson of North Village is also rumoured to be headed that way after just one season with the Red Devils. So too, is Stephen Arorash of Somerset Trojans, while departing from their ranks is Clinton Caisey -- headed to either Boulevard or North Village -- Larance Durham and Mark Ray who could be on his way back to Devonshire Colts.

Rumours just after the FA Cup final circulated that a number of players would depart from Vasco, including Corey Hill, Irving Burgess, Sinclair Gibbons and Dwight Basden but none of those names appear on the list of releases.

The promotion of Somerset Eagles has given some Somerset Trojans players another option and the likes of Paul Place, Randy Simmons, Ricardo Tucker, Kwame Tucker, Kelly Simmons, Dion Minors and Stephen Burrows have all applied for releases. All except Place (Dandy Town), Tucker (Rangers) and Arorash have been linked with Eagles, who also have captain Terrence Christopher and Sam Maybury applying for transfers.

Devonshire Colts appear to be the club that will be hardest hit by departures with Leonard Hypolite, Antoine Lightbourne, Chris Caisey, Anthony Wilson, Sinclair Smith, Marvin Lewis, Cordell Gilbert, Yul Wade, James Pace, Derek Wright, Aljame Zuill and Roydon Holdipp all seeking releases. Lightbourne and Wilson could find their way to Dandy Town while Marvin Lewis has shown interest in joining PHC.

The Zebras will likely lose Shawn Simons, possibly to Southampton Rangers while Andrew Bascome has applied for his player release from North Village.

Bascome's brother Herbie, has applied for a release from St. George's, alongwith his brother-in-law Gregg Foggo and Leroy Robinson who joined them last season from Hamilton Parish.
