Zarak Khan of Pakistan, seeded third in the tournament and eighth in the world, lost 3-1 to England's Del Harris. Zarak won the first game 15-11, but Harris, one of England's finest players, then delivered the knockout blow with three consecutive victories, 15-9, 15-12 and 15-6.

The second major upset took place when top seed Brett Martin lost a 3-2 heart-breaker to England's Paul Gregory. Easily the most thrilling match of the tournament so far, Gregory (ranked 31st in the world) topped Martin in the first game. Martin seemed headed for victory when he took a tie-breaker in the third game to grab a 2-1 lead. He then lost the final two games.

Rodney Eyles, ranked second in the tournament and fourth in the world, lost to Zubair Khan 15-4, 10-15, 9-15, 15-3, 15-12 in a tight battle to complete the night of upsets.
