"There were a lot of hills on the course today,'' Franklin said of the two-to-four foot swells. "I enjoyed the race. The rougher the better.'' Added Mancell: "It was tough swimming against the waves. On the way to the first buoy it ran through my head, `What am I doing here'.'' Franklin was pushed by David Cash during the first lap and then Cowen on the second before catching a wave into the beach for the finish.
Twenty-nine swimmers entered the race. Three others decided not to participate and one returned to the beach after starting. Next race in the series is March 12, three-quarters of a mile at Evans Bay Wharf.
