Trojans return to top flight

Somerset Trojans booked their passage out of the Second Division after just one season when they hammered Parish at Somerset yesterday to avenge an earlier loss at Wellington Oval.

But it wasn't until Wolves, who still have a game remaining, went down to Hotels at Devonshire Rec. that the Trojans were able to celebrate as their lead widened to six points.

Improving their goal difference was utmost in the minds of Somerset players just in case Wolves finished level on points.

And the Trojans took a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes.

Nine minutes into the match they broke the deadlock when Anthony Burchall's cross from deep on the right dropped inside the far post. Eight minutes later Darin Minors scored the second following a corner on the right which was won by the overlapping Burchall.

Everett Wellman added the third when he scored from a quick Trojans break after Parish wasted a free kick inside the Somerset penalty area.

Two more goals early in the second half settled the issue, with Burchall scoring in the 54th minute from a rebound after a Duvall Binns shot hit the underside of the crossbar and in the 61st minute Lamaul Crofton steered a header into the far bottom corner from a cross on the right.

Wolves 0 Hotels 2 Wolves were eliminated from the Second Division promotion race despite giving a spirited performance against champions Hotels at Devonshire Rec.

The scoreline indicates a comfortable victory for Hotels, but in fact the champions were severely tested by a formidable young Wolves side from start to finish.

Territorially Wolves had the better of things in a fast, exhilarating match but they were to eventually learn that having a decided edge in any area other than scoring means very little.

Veteran Joey Weeks and Ricky Hill teamed up to deliver Hotels the first goal, Weeks being put through by his team-mate to send a fierce shot home from 17 yards after just seven minutes.

Inspired by the hard work of striker Nathan Webbe and Michael Dill in midfield, Wolves fought back but repeatedly frustrated their fans with shots high and wide.

Hotels' defence was held together by the fine work of centreback Diallo Sharieff.

Wolves' best chance came after 43 minutes when Webbe missed a sitter, placing his lob into the side netting after a long ball into the defence went over the head of goalkeeper Stephen Dupres.

Webbe had no better luck in the second half when his blast from 22 yards hit the bar while Hotels had their scoring problems also when substitute Craig Crichlow put his angled shot at goalkeeper Hewonne Brown from close range.

Wolves followed up with good shots from Johnny Nusum and substitute Vince Minors that went just over the bar.

But then Crichlow floored them a minute from time when he netted Hotels' second.

Paget 2 Som. Eagles 1 Mid-table Paget picked up another good win when they stopped Eagles at Southampton Oval.

Dean Ming opened the scoring in the ninth minute and Troy Burgess made it 2-0 in the 55th before Dion Minors pulled one back for Eagles 20 minutes later.

Prospect 4 BAA 6 BAA scored four second-half goals on their way to victory over Prospect at Police Field. They led 2-1 at the interval.

Leading the visitors to victory were Wayne DeSilva and Tito Smith with two goals apiece while Donovan Thompson and Meshach Wade netted the other two goals.
