Tucker's lightning ton stuns Somerset

Somerset 257-4 Janeiro Tucker broke out of his batting slump with the quickest century of the season as Southampton Rangers won the First Division Overs title with a victory on faster run rate at Southampton Oval on Sunday.

Even Keith Wainwright's season-best unbeaten 131 had to play second fiddle to Tucker's blistering onslaught as he smashed 115 in just 62 minutes with a 34-ball knock that saw 104 of the runs come in boundaries from 11 fours and 10 sixes.

Coming to the crease at 189-5, Tucker quickly had nine-man Somerset wishing they hadn't taken the fifth wicket of Kamen Tucker as the Somerset Cup Match allrounder quickly began hitting boundaries to all parts of the field.

He and Wainwright shared in a sixth wicket stand worth 181 runs which beat the 122 that Wainwright added for the third wicket with Kwame Tucker (68).

Wainwright stroked 18 fours and four sixes in his best knock of the season.

Both centuries topped the 115 not out that Clay Smith scored the previous weekend for St. David's in the Eastern Counties, while the team total is also the highest for the season.

With promotion already assured, Rangers were able to shuffle their batting order as David Burchall (20) and David Saltus (22) were promoted to openers and gave the home team a 43-run start after winning the toss.

Three Somerset bowlers took two wickets each, with Chris Cox claiming two for 15 in one over, Tacoma Robinson two for 48 in nine and Gladwin Ingham two for 59 off six. On an easy batting wicket, Winston Reid came in for the harshest treatment, particularly from Tucker, as his 10 overs cost an expensive 102 runs and yielded just one wicket.

Former Rangers player, Ingham, and Sidney Simmons were joint top scorers for Somerset with 71 apiece as they made a gallant fightback to reach 257-4 in 41 overs when bad light stopped play. Opener E. Johnston scored 35 as Janeiro Tucker claimed two for 32 from 10 overs.

Flatts 311-5 Social Club 28 Flatts sealed the second promotion spot when they feasted off a meagre Social Club attack with opener Millard Bean stroking 101 in a whopping 283-run victory over their short-handed opponents at Nationals.

Social Club paid dearly for fielding only eight players as the Flatts batsmen got in some useful batting as a tune-up for Saturday's Eastern Counties final against champions St. David's at Sea Breeze Oval.

Bean scored 101 of the first 160 Flatts runs before he was third out after hitting five sixes and seven fours. Also among the runs were Hewvonne Brown with 75 not out (six sixes and seven fours), Gershon Gibbons with 52 not out (two sixes and three fours), Rodney Woolridge 29 and Troy Dean 16.

Leonard Gilks led the Social Club bowling with two for 67 while Shawn Spencer had two for 87.

The demolition of Social Club didn't take long as they were dismissed in just 17.3 overs with none of their players reaching double figures.

Dean led the bowling with two for five off seven overs, including three maidens, while player-coach Dwayne Leverock had two for eight off three overs.

PHC 92 Cleveland 98-1 Carlton Smith claimed four wickets for 14 runs off 10 overs, with four maidens, as Cleveland easily beat PHC by nine wickets at Wellington Oval.

Supporting Smith in the demise of PHC was Gregory Talbot who took two for seven off 3.3 overs.

Millard Rawlins was high scorer for PHC with 22 while skipper Cal Waldron hit 18, Arthur Richards 13 and Mark Smith 11.

Jason Simons steered PHC to victory with 52 not out while opener Courtney Trott was undefeated with 21. Talbot scored 10.

JANEIRO TUCKER -- slammed 115 off just 34 balls.
