Umpire struck at Cup Match
somebody with the intention of harming him when the field was invaded after Somerset recorded their historic victory yesterday.
Mr. Raynor, president of the Bermuda Cricket Umpires Association, came into the changing room grimacing in pain, bending and holding his arm.
"I think somebody got me with a blow,'' said Mr. Raynor to a Somerset attendant. He added that he didn't know if the blow was done on purpose or not.
Some speculated that a fan was irritated by a few decisions Mr. Raynor made that went against St. George's -- especially near the end when Mr. Raynor began to walk off the field in disgust after arguments with St. George's players when Corey Hill and Albert Steede were batting.
St. George's were claiming that Steede obstructed a fielder while scoring a run and the dispute led to ugly exchanges between the two sides -- exchanges that also saw the rival captains Dexter Basden and Clay Smith firing exchanges at each other.
Clearly upset by the incident Mr. Raynor attempted to walk off the field in disgust but his colleague Randy Butler urged him to persevere and he returned to the middle and play resumed.
After that the game was set for an exciting finish and produced a result that didn't surprise the Somerset skipper.
"I knew it was going to be a hard task, but our minds were made up from Wednesday night when we stayed together at Willowbank. We dreamed, ate and talked cricket, and everybody had the same goal which was to win,'' said Basden.
"I was confident when we went after our target. I did get concerned along the way, especially at the end, but our batsmen stuck to it and came through and provided the support that we required.''
