Vasco back on the title trail
First Division matches tomorrow.
Top team Vasco take on third-from-bottom Devonshire Cougars knowing that their opponents cannot be taken lightly, especially after shocking North Village in their last outing.
But Vasco should still be favourites, having gone 10 games without a loss in the league.
And if they are awarded the points from their recently abandoned match against Southampton Rangers when they held a 3-1 lead late in the game, Vasco could be well on their way to a second straight league title.
Presently Vasco and Village are tied on 22 points with Vasco having a game in hand over the other contenders who each have seven games remaining.
Village will be aiming to get back on the championship track at home to Devonshire Colts at Bernard Park. Colts, just above the relegation zone, gave themselves a boost in midweek when they stopped Dandy Town in the Friendship.
Now they will be aiming to carry that form into the league where they still need points to put behind them the threat of relegation.
Recent confirmation that two teams instead of three will be relegated at the end of the season throws another lifeline to those teams in or just above the relegation zone. Even last-placed Hamilton Parish now have a better chance of escaping the drop, though they will soon have to go on a winning streak to close in on the teams above them.
Tomorrow, Parish travel to Devonshire Rec. to meet last season's promotion partners, Wolves, in a crucial match for both teams.
Wolves have maintained a top four position since qualifying for the Dudley Eve in December. But with three teams just two points behind, they could find themselves in the bottom half of the standings with another bad result.
Wolves went down to Boulevard in their last outing and now Boulevard will be looking to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season when they host Somerset Trojans at St. David's.
Dwight Warren missed that match with Wolves with a foot injury, but the two-week break should enable him to return this weekend to boost a Boulevard attack that will welcome his experience.
The other match will see Southampton Rangers take on Dandy Town at Southampton Oval as two early season title pretenders battle to stay within sight of the leaders. Rangers are without a win in their three matches in 1999.
The top Second Division match will also be at Southampton Oval where PHC and St. David's clash in a battle of the first and second-placed teams. And with two teams being promoted St. David's know the importance of a victory if they are to hold onto that place.
PHC, seven points ahead of St. David's, are just a couple of wins away from booking their passage back into the First Division, leaving St. David's, Somerset Eagles and Prospect to battle for the second spot.
Social Club, in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup but second-from-bottom in the league standings, could spoil Eagles' push at Bernard Park while Prospect take on St. George's at Police Field. Paget host Ireland Rangers at White Hill in the other match.
The match that could decide the title race in Division A of the Commercial League takes place this morning at White Hill Field where first and second placed Robin Hood and Fire Service clash at 11.00. Fire lost their unbeaten record last weekend and need to defeat unbeaten Hood to reclaim top spot on goal difference.
Tonight's Women's League double-header between Rude Girls and Prospect and PHC and Wolves at BAA Field has been postponed.
