Vasco feeling the pressure
blush, Bermuda Football Association flip-flopped last week in awarding PHC three points from the previously annulled October 8 clash against St.
George's.
Not that the Zebras are complaining. For despite being beaten 1-0 by Southampton Rangers last Sunday, they still awoke Monday morning to find themselves elevated to the head of the First Division standings.
But their stay could be a short one as Vasco come to town tomorrow, both hurting and hungry.
The hurt: just a single win in their last five outings against two losses and a pair of draws.
Still, that lone victory came against the Zebras and it was not even close, Vasco shredding the league's best defence for four unanswered goals during a vintage attacking display.
Just prior to that match PHC lost midfield schemer Kenny Mills to a cycling mishap and they have not appeared remotely close to the same bunch in his absence.
The hunger: Vasco know that victory is desperately needed if they are to put themselves in position to defend their Dudley Eve Trophy.
If not for suffering a severe letdown against St. David's a week ago Dandy Town could have become the first team to secure a spot in the Dudley Eve.
Instead they find themselves in the middle of a dogfight with seven others, all clamouring for the chance at a piece of silverware.
The same goes for North Village, Town's opponents tomorrow at Bernard Park.
At times brilliant and other times barely ordinary, both teams have been something of an enigma this season and it's anyone's guess which will show for this dance.
Once their strength, defence has become a major area of concern for head coaches Mark Trott (Town) and Wendell Baxter (Village).
Village, after ending the 1995-96 campaign as the stingiest in terms of goals allowed, are currently third worst with 11 goals conceded, with only St.
George's (17) and Devonshire Cougars (16) having allowed more. Town are not much better, opponents have ravaged their back four for 10 strikes.
Appearing more threatened are Village, as they will have to deal with the double strike threat of Darron Simons and Carlos Smith, even though both have been recently slowed by injuries.
At Lord's the Islanders will be intent on proving their 2-1 win over Town to have been no mere flash in the pan as they welcome Southampton and if Andrew Bascome's clan can produce another showing to rival that of a week ago, their climb up the table could continue.
Striker Ascento Russell will likely again come in for constant attention in the continued absence of Janeiro Tucker, making it imperative that team-mates pick up the slack.
The other Sunday afternoon fixture also occurs at the east end -- Wellington Oval -- where last placed St. George's entertain Devonshire Colts, currently fourth.
As if their problems on the pitch were not enough, recent internal strife has served to further tear at a side seemingly already doomed to relegation despite the season being but seven games old.
However, despite a lofty spot, all is not well in the land of orange and white either, with several players known to be not in concert with recent moves by coach Vic Ball.
Tomorrow's Second Division match between Prospect and BAA has been postponed until December 10. All other sporting events involving Police teams have also been postponed because of a funeral tomorrow.
The following changes have been made to the weekend and midweek schedule: Today -- Alliance KO Cup play-off -- PHC v Paget, PHC Stadium, 3 p.m; Commercial Division -- Prison Officers v Fire Service, Malabar, 3 p.m.
Sunday -- Somerset Eagles v Paget, White Hill, 3 p.m.
