Vasco's future in doubt as player exodus looms
Goalkeeper Timmy Figureido is one of 14 players who could be leaving Vasco this summer.
And if there is another mass exodus it could signal the death of one of the Island's top clubs.
Last year the club faced the threat of folding after losing several starters and struggling to register sufficient players to replace them.
The situation eventually had a happy ending when the Bermuda Football Association allowed them extra time to sign more players.
Now the club, one of the top teams in local football during the 1990s when they won the league three times in four seasons, could find themselves in a similar predicament after it was learned that some of their top players are keeping their options open.
By Friday's deadline most of their key players had submitted transfer release forms, the list including one of their longest serving players, Figureido, the Caisey brothers, Albert, Clinton and Taur, Jamal Smith, Sinclair Gibbons, Jermaine Belboda, Keenan Burchall, Kuma Smith, Irving Burgess, Del Tyrrell, Dwight Basden, Diallo Sharrieff and Keith Jennings.
Rumours are circulating that Figureido is considering a move to league champions PHC, a rumour the player himself did not deny when contacted yesterday.
"There are lots of rumours going around and people have asked me about it,'' stated the 27-year-old Figureido.
"No, I won't deny it, but I'm just keeping my options open. There is a possibility I might move on. If all those guys are not going to come back then, realistically, what type of team are we going to have?'' Last season, despite the early distractions, Vasco still remained one of the top teams, reaching the final of the Dudley Eve and finishing sixth in the league to book another spot in next season's Martonmere Cup.
Vasco won't know until the end of July what players will either remain with the club or even join the team. The registration deadline is July 31 while the registration for clubs for the season is August 1. There is also a late transfer period in August, but players waiting until that time won't be able to sign with a club until November 15.
A host of other players are also keeping their transfer options. Dandy Town have a number of players, including Earl Richardson, Dean Bailey, Kwame Steede, Heys Wolffe, Raymond Beach, Sean Smith and Curtis Azhar, submitting release forms while Wolves have goalkeeper Cymande Davis and Ellington Weldon doing the same.
Devonshire Colts could lose Troy Hall, Wayne Henry, Jerry Laws and Derek Wright while the defending champions have Ricky Mallory and Vic Ball keeping their options open. Nashon Burrows and Craig Darrell could be leaving relegated Southampton Rangers while Social Club have Dyke Lawrence, Jahma Charles and Dennis Russell looking at a possible move.
Herbie Bascome, who helped Vasco as a coach last season, has obtained a release from the last club he played for, Boulevard, while Andre Hendrickson has also applied for a release from the relegated club.
Timmy Figureido: may leave Vasco.
